Steelers linebacker James Harrison cashed in on his incredible 2008 season by agreeing to a new contract that is worth $51.175 million over the next six seasons, according to a source.

Harrison was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year last season and had a 100-yard interception return before the half in the Steelers' Super Bowl victory over the Arizona Cardinals. He was scheduled to make $1.4 million this season, the final year of his contract.

Included in the contract is about $20 million in bonuses, the source said.

I hear this this morning. And at first I was wondering if it wasn't too much $ for a 30-year-old LB. And then I thought, "F that. This guy was league DMVP and made one of the biggest plays in NFL history to win the SB. Plus, players will note in the heads that if you produce for the team, the team does reward you." This was a borderline case (i.e. paying someone top $ at this age.) But since Silverback played so WELL for such little $ up to know, and since he is THE tone setter for a violent defense (those guys are so hard to find and defenses are not nearly as good without them - see LT, Greg Lloyd, Jack Lambert, Mike Singletary, Ray Lewis, Dick Butkus) - pay the man. Even if we say a few years later, that his price tag is too high, we are better off over all with taking care of him and pleasing the football gods. (You don't screw over solid people, or you end up like the Browns and Bengals).

Silverback gets almost no gloss for how great he is, even with winning the DMVP. I guess it probably has to do with zero gloss coming into the league and probably never giving the media any quotes. But he is a beast: a football player made in a test tube. He's a little older than you'd like to pay huge $, but I can't think of a better situation when you would over pay for a 30-year-old player.

My gawd I luv Silverback but there are 12 starters coming up for re-up after next yr. The only ones they'll target are Heath & FWP(maybe). Better draft some D since R.Clark, Keisel, Foote, Hampton, + the Colon, Maxipad, etc will be gone after this deal.

Yeah, it is a metric assload of $$$$. Maybe they're counting on a strike/lack of salary cap in 2011 when the CBA will have expired...
But, he did make one of THE best plays in SB history when the Steelers needed it the most. I say congrats to Silverback.
