all time billy cowher team...

Postby steelblood14 » Fri Mar 27, 2009 4:24 pm

i've been bored the past few days, and decided since we are a couple years removed from bill cowher as coach, why not amass an all-time bill cowher team...so here goes...

offense

QB-ben of courcse
RB-the bus
WRs- ward, thigpen
TE-miller
Ts-gandy, marvel smith
G-searcy, faneca
C-dirt
FB-kreider

Defense
NT-hamptom
DEs-aaron smith, orpheus roye
OLB-green, lloyd
ILB-farrior, kirkland
CB-woodson, ike taylor
FS-darren perry
SS-troy

Special teams
PK-reed
Punter-josh miller
Returner-randel el.

so thats what i came up with...any thoughts and you guys' lists if you are as bored as i am.

QB-ben of courcse - A given, but BC would probably say Kordell should have consideration, but when didn't BC exaggerate slashy's worth.

RB-the bus - with a 1B going to Barry Bananas Foster

WRs- ward, thigpen - Ditto

TE-miller - Eric Green could have been in the running if he wasn't so lazy and undisciplined. If it's true he threw a party the night before the AFCC game, that really sucks

Ts-gandy, marvel smith
G-searcy, faneca - Was Searcy OG? I thought he was RT
C-dirt
FB-kreider

Defense
NT-hamptom
DEs-aaron smith, orpheus roye
OLB-green, lloyd
ILB-farrior, kirkland - Chad Brown doesn't make discussion somewhere at LB?
CB-woodson, ike taylor
FS-darren perry
SS-troy - Carnel Lake doesn't make the safety discussions?

Special teams
PK-reed
Punter-josh miller
Returner-randel el.

I might go with Chad Brown instead of Farrior.

To make the all-Cowher team, do they just have had to played for him?

Well...I had a complete lineup of Steelers starters and Statistics from Pro-Football-Reference up here to show a few surprising things, but I accidently hit back on this page instead of the statistics site like I meant to. Save your work, kids.

Long Story Short:

Wide Receiver

Might have to consider Plaxico over Yancey. Plax started 5 years to Yancey's 2.

OLine

LT John Jackson
LG Alan Faneca
C Dermontti Dawson
RG Kendall Simmons or Justin Strzelczyk
RT Marvel Smith

Searcy was a RT, 3 year starter. He had some success at Jacksonville. The right side was weak for Cowher. Not 1 Pro Bowler at RG or RT.

DLine

LE Aaron Smith
NT Joel Steed or Casey Hampton (Casey went to more Pro Bowls, but Joel had better stats)
RE Kimo von Oelhoffen or Kevin Henry

Orpheus Roye started at RE for 1.5 years and wasn't really that good.

Linebackers

LOLB Jason Gildon - 8 year starter, 3 Pro Bowls, 1 All Star (9 Sacks/Yr Starting)
or Kevin Greene - 3 year starter, 2 Pro Bowls, 1 All Star (11 Sacks/Yr Starting)
LILB Levon Kirkland - 8 year starter, 2 Pro Bowls, 1 All Star
RILB Chad Brown - Started all 4 years, 1 Pro Bowl, 1 All Star
or James Farrior - 5 year starter, 1 Pro Bowl, 1 All Star
ROLB Greg Lloyd - 5 year starter, 4 Pro Bowls, 3 All Stars (6 Sacks/Yr Starting)
or Joey Porter - 7 year starter, 3 Pro Bowls, 1 All Star (8 Sacks/Yr Starting)

Pretty much the same with Gildon, Porter, and Brown for comparison.

Defensive Backfield

CB Rod Woodson - Started all 4 years, 4 Pro Bowls, 3 All Star (5 Ints/Yr Starting)
FS Darren Perry - Started all 7 years (4.5 Ints/Yr Starting)
SS Troy Polamalu - 3 year starter, 3 Pro Bowls, 1 All Star (3 Ints/Yr Starting)
or Carnell Lake - Started all 7 years, 4 Pro Bowls, 1 All Star (2 Ints/Yr Starting)
CB Chad Scott - Started all 7 years (3 Ints/Yr Starting)
or Dewayne Washington - 6 year starter (3 Ints/Yr Starting)

Ike can't be given the not after 2 sub par years starting. He really came into his own under Tomlin. How did Darren Perry never make a Pro Bowl? I forgot how good he was. Drafted 8th Rd, starter from Day 1.

I more meant, do they have to have played for cowher or have been drafted while he was here.

Not sure Woodson & Dawson are "cowher" guys.

This isn't my thread/idea, but I will add my 2 cents.

I think you have to include players like Woodson, Dawson, and Lloyd who weren't drafted by Cowher but he inherited. I have two reasonings behind this.

One, the draft is part GM and part coach. We could sit here all day and argue over who Cowher picked and who Colbert picked.

Two, having a player like Dawson at center prevented Cowher from drafting/developing his own center. He was set for his first 5 years at the position.

Three, he inherited and coached those players. While Lloyd wasn't a Cowher guy before, he sure was after a few years in his system. Same goes for Dawson and Woodson.

I also think you have to consider only the players time under Cowher. Not Greenes body of work or Bens last two years under Tomlin.

Excellent points by GCC

there's the longevity verse talent question also;

example:
Will Wolford was one of th best guards to ever wear the Black and Gold, but wasn't a Steeler very long.
Chad Brown is another good example.

Here's my 53 man "Cowher" roster.

QB-Big Ben, NOD,
RB-Bettis, Foster, FWP, Bam Morris,
WRs- Ward, Thigpen, Hastings, Randel el, Earnie Mills
TE-Miller, Bruener, eric Green
Ts-Jackson, Searcy, Gandy, Marvel Smith
G-Wolford, Faneca, Stai, strzelczyk
C-Dawson, Hartings
FB-John L. William, Krieder

Defense
NT-hampton , Steed
DEs-aaron smith, Ray Seals, Brentson Bucker, orpheus roye
OLB-green, lloyd, Gildon, Porter
ILB-kirkland, Brown, Holmes, & Farrior
CB-woodson, ike taylor, Willie Williams, Figures, Scott, Washington
Safties - Troy, Lake, Perry, Flowers

Special teams
PK-Anderson
Punter-josh miller
Returner-randel el.

No love for Tim Lester at FB? The original Bus Driver. :sufootballhelmet:

Like Lester a lot, but find him 1 dimensional, and Krieder better at that one thing -blocking.
(if the roster went to 60, Lester would make it)

John L. was a complete FB could block, catch and run; he's my starter by far.

Glad somebody brought up Ray Seals and Brentson Buckner.

What about Carlton Haselrig at RG? I know he wasn't on the team long, and he had some problems that prompted his departure from the league, but that guy had some talent, didn't he?

Also, Louis Lipps played a couple years under Cowher... is that enough to qualify him, even if they weren't his best seasons?
