Marvel & 49ers agree on terms

Postby thesteelhammer » Sat Mar 28, 2009 8:27 am

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with unrestricted free-agent OT Marvel Smith (Steelers) on a two-year deal, according to a league source. The deal could be worth just under $10.5 million, according to a source.

the San Francisco 49ers have released OT Jonas Jennings.
49ers expect OT Marvel Smith to start at right tackle this season.

more than the stillers were ever going to give him, and probably a lot imho for a guy who has a 50/50 chance of making it through 16 games. but if he stays healthy it'll look like a great signing, i just don't think its worth the risk.

Marvel played well for a long time.

However, at this stage, he's not worth $10.50 let alone $10.5 MM.

There is better use for that money.

I don't understand why people who do this for a living haven't noticed that once a back goes on a big man, it will never hold up to rigorous sports activity again. There is little chance Marvel will make it through the season. But they just hand him X million (don't know how much is guaranteed) without understanding this

It's just a calculated risk, which is really a combination of hope and desperation in this case. The niners are praying that Smith's back problems are just a thing of the past like his agent wants everyone to believe. As much as I want Marvel to do well, I'd be surprised if he makes it through a season injury-free. It's just so hard to come back from multiple back surgeries...

the niners pretty well suck donkey dick. they have to bring in players who will teach young and developing players how to act like winners and champs.
signing marvel for 10 million to educate young players and get someone that can play isn't that crazy.
