WTF for? What about Dixon. Why bring back 55 year old Batch _and_ Leftwich. BL wanted to go some where with a chance of winning a starting job. That ain't Pgh.

Batch and Leftwich are both great backup QB's. They can both be depended upon, IMHO. Lefty saved Ben's ass quite a few times this past season. I wouldn't be disappointed if Leftwich rec'd a starting job somewhere, though. He deserves it.
You don't like Batch? Whatchu talkin' bout, Willis?

Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
Has Byron been approached by other teams? I'd be shocked if we were able to hold onto him. Here is a brief list of mediocre QBs
1) Sean Hill (49ers)
2) Jason Campbell (Redskins)
3) Kellen Clemens (Jets)
4) Dante Culpepper (Lions)...yep, he's on the list
5) Rex Grossman/Kyle Orton combo (Bears)
6) Derek Anderson (Browns)
7) Tony Romo (Cowboys)
IMO Lefty holds his own against any of the above. I thought he would have already been scooped up in FA by now, especially after he really shined in the limited amount of time he played last year. I also think we should hold onto Batch for one more year, until Dixon has some more time to put some more meat on his bones.

I like Batch, but we got to move on and develop younger players and Dixon has huge upside. I'd be OK if Batch and Dixon came back, assuming BL does find a team where he has a chance to start. Batch wasted most of his career in Detroit. In Pgh, when he wasn't rusty, he proved quite good as a back up.

My God look at that list. Although no way does he show up in Dallas with a legit chance of starting. But 49ers, Skins, Jets, Lions, Bears....come on. They have to be looking to give BL a try. Those are all really super lame QB situations.

If Leftwich stays, Batch is just a waste of roster space. I believe hes done though I wouldn't mind him staying in the burgh as a QB's coach

Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
Steelers fans always seem to have some love affair with the 3rd string QB. Dennis Dixon is the latest craze. I would take Leftwich over Dixon anyday. Batch is an odd issue - I think Colbert and the Rooneys don't want to cut him knowing it will end his career. Heck, I don't want to see him go but the love affair makes me want to say keep Dixon over Batch.
We can probably scratch the Bears off of the need a QB list. They are too stubborn to go and get one. I think they had 12 picks in last years draft with 3- #2s and they didn't pick up a QB. Management is killing that team.
I wish they would sign Harrison so they can move on to grab up people like Leftwich.

Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
I really doubt both get resigned. If they do neither will get much of a signing bonus and there will be an open competition during camp for the #2 job. There is no reason to have two 30+ QB's on the roster.
I like Batch and he is from the burgh. However, he is 4-5yrs older than lefty and has had a couple of significant injuries. If both are available I would lean towards Leftwitch.
Plus unless he flops Dixon is the #2 QB of the future.

Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
I would sign up Byron and put Batch on the coaching staff. Leftwich could be a starter on half the teams in the league but if they can't see it, the Stiller are much stronger with him waiting in the wings.
Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
Colbert is just saying that so he doesn't get burned by Byron.
Clearly the choice is Lefty as our #2 and Dixon as our #3. The problem occurs if Lefty goes elsewhere (and who among us isn't surprised that he hasn't already?) and then he's left with Dixon if he doesn't say he wants both (Batch and Byron). This way, he's protected, if Byron leaves, he said he wanted to sign both, and so he'll keep Charlie and Dixon. If Byron stays, then he can cut Charlie and keep Dixon.

Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
Leftwich far superior player to Batch...Tomlin obviously likes Batch the two are always conrversing on the sideline but its time to cut Batch loose...let him either sign with another team (unlikely...teams aren't even in a hurry to sign Leftwich) and let him come back as an assistant coach when his playing days are done (likely). However, Leftwich has stated he wants at least an opportunity to compete for a starting position. He's certainly not going to get that in pittsburgh. Ben, Batch, and Dixon will be the Steelers qbs in 2009.

Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
I like Batch but Lefty is way younger. Sooner or later Ben is gonna not get up from one of those sacks & we're gonna need a guy for 7-8 weeks. Tomczak was kinda like Batch - good for a gm or 2 but eventually had a trainwreck 3 INT performance. Batch is a great mentor to Ben but I don't really think he needs him much now w/ 2 Rings on his hand.
Re: Colbert wants to re-sign Batch & Leftwich
mclovin's missing the point as usual. lefty has said repeatedly he wants an opp to compete for a starting job somewhere (and unlike many other players who say similar, he actually *is* good enough to warrant a shot at competing for the starting job with several teams). that being said, he doesn't appear to be getting much (any?) attention this off-season. in fact, i don't recall reading a single article, blog, rumour, etc. that any team has even called his agent, let alone offered a work-out.
so here we are, byron quite possibly may not get his wish to compete for a starting job. if that is the case, then why wouldn't he choose to remain in the burgh as our #2 (in a system he knows, likes, and has had some success with when called upon) rather than go to another city/system/team and be their #2? the answer is of course that he would choose to remain our back-up rather than a back-up anywhere else. one can only hope things play out this way. ben, lefty, dixon; thank charlie and then send him on his way to pursue his life's work.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reported today that unrestricted free-agent QB Byron Leftwich (Steelers) is talking with an unnamed NFL team about a contract. The Pittsburgh Steelers have told Leftwich they are interested in re-signing him.

I like Leftwich as a backup. The reason he hasn't got much starter interest is because teams have film on him from the Jags. Doesn't anyone in here remember how long his windup is? If you know you're playing against him you put zone schemes in and jump his passes while he loads up. He's a good backup and spot starter.

I read that article too. It talked about both Lefty and Garcia and why teams don't want them. Seemed like a nice rational explanation at the time. The part that doesn't figure is why Byron doesn't work on correcting that problem. Although, in the Steeler games that he's started or releived in it seems that he's improved a lot in his wind up and delivery.
