Duke Robinson or William Beatty

Postby lloydrules » Wed Mar 11, 2009 3:31 pm

That's the two that show up on the vast majority of mock drafts. One mock has them taking a WR from FSU! THAT better not happen.

I would be happy with either of these picks. Duke is an OG and Beatty an OT. I feel we have a bigger need at OT. I'd love to see Beatty at LT, Kemo LG, Hartwig C, Colon RG and whoever wins camp competition for RT. These are mostly the same names at the OL but I feel adding Beatty at LT, moving Colon to RG and maybe Starks at RT will make for a much better OL.

I've seen a lot of Mack out of Cal or Unger from Oregon. I also saw CB starting to show up after Macfadden signed with AZ.

I don't really see Starks getting dethroned at LT. It would be nice to move Wille back to RG and have an RT come from the draft.

Do you think Starks has played well at LT? I'm not saying either way, I didn't really notice; I just know the OL couldn't open any running lanes or pass protect over all. It just needs to get better - I don't care how

I think Starks is an adequate (not great) LT. The reason I think he will keep is job is because
a) they franchised him
b) they seem to be interested in working out a longer-term deal.
c) I don't see Tomlin starting 2 rookies on the O-line right after a SB win. I think a more likely option is putting Colon back at RG and maybe putting a draft pick on the edge. But even then you're asking a rookie to protect a $102 million dollar investment...yikes.

I'm hoping/praying that we can pick up 2 quality O-lineman in the draft that could be productive, but the Steelers (for better or worse) do not put rookies in the limelight right away. This being the case, I think the most likely scenario is that we will have the same O-line next year....with a possibility of a change at RT.

First Andre Smith looks like crap at the combine and LEAVES, then he does not put up great numbers at Pro Day,...
Any chance this kid could fall far enough for us to get a chance at him (Maybe by a trade)?

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports University of Alabama OT Andre Smith measured in at a height of 6-foot-4 1/4 and a weight of 325 pounds at his Pro Day. Smith ran the 40-yard dash in 5.28 seconds and 5.33 seconds, the three-cone drill in 7.88 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.93 seconds. He measured a 25-inch vertical jump, a 7-foot-10 inch broad jump and completed 19 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. He did look good during his positional drills.

The Associated Press reports University of Alabama OT Andre Smith was asked during his Pro Day Wednesday, March 11, why he decided to leave the NFL Scouting Combine on the day offensive linemen were supposed to participate in drills. Smith said, "I just made a bad decision in leaving the combine. If I had it to do all over again, I would handle it differently. I just made a bad decision in leaving, but I think I made a great football decision to get back and start working out with my trainer."

Faneca started day 1 as a rookie and did well. I think Simmons might have as well, but both are OGs. Did Marvel start as a rookie? I hope to God the starting OL isn't the same; that's asking far too much of Ben.

Andre Smith had severe bitch tits at his pro day - he looked like a fat tub of goo. He could only do 19 reps... I was not impressed at all Hammer. He may fall, but he has bust written all over him. I'm not sure we would want him because he is more likely to become a worthless slob rather than a top 5 tackle.

Having said that, Tomlin seems to have a good rep. with players on several levels - he is the X factor in all of this. Still, 19 reps aint too good after "working out" with his trainer.

Delta,
that is one of the funnier things I've read in awhile.

Tank,
I hear you and share some of those concerns, but also am not one to think work out numbers are more important than what the guy actually did on the field during games.
Smith was good during his college career. That may not translate to the NFL and he may be a bust, but work out numbers don't necessarily ether.
I think what happened with Simth is that he let himself get out of shape after the season ended. He may not be a starter this year if he is that weak.

The bigger concern is that he will be lazy. Lazy doesn't work out in the NFL - too much parity in talent - if you slack, you suck. If this guy is already lazy BEFORE he gets his $ what will he be like once he gets his signing bonus, etc?

No Duke Robinson and Definately no William Beatty. Robinson is Kemo part II...Mayock showed a highlight reel that showed his power but also showed his ability to wiff on his blocks. Beatty is a product of the Mike Mayoch hype machine...very little upper body strength was bullrushed repeatedly at senior bowl. IMO Colbert will trade up in this trade and target a player such as Tyson Jackson to play DE. This draft is woefully short on quality 3-4 DEs and the Steelers need some youth to groom behind Smith and Keisel. I'm not sold on Jarron Gilbert a one year wonder that has bust written all over him.

If your'e looking for an upgrade over Stapleton, I could see Colbert taking Eric Wood who is better value than Robinson due to versatility with the #32 pick if he can't find a trade partner to move up with. Wood would easily displace Stapleton at RG and take over for Hartwig next year. Wood is from Cincinatti and the Bengals just released their starting center Eric Ghiacuic so I could see the Bengals targeting Wood in the early 2nd round. I really believe that Colbert will move around in this trade either in the first or 2nd round and give away some of his picks this draft. There are very few roster spots to be had...I see Colbert drafting 6 players max.

To me we have to go OT on O-line. We need a bigger body on the RT and Colon can go back to RG, where he can't flagged for illegal formation every week.

This kid's stock just dropped.

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Texas Tech OT Rylan Reed (knee) suffered a knee injury during his first 40-yard dash attempt and was taken to the hospital.

John Crumpacker, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the San Francisco 49ers scouting department was "impressed" with OT Andre Smith's performance at his Pro Day.

Carlos Holmes, of the Dayton Daily News, reports the Cincinnati Bengals appear to be interested in Baylor OT Jason Smith.
