Joey Galloway to visit Steelers

Postby steelmoney » Mon Mar 09, 2009 12:55 pm

Joey Galloway visiting Steelers
This is surprising. It looks like the team is having second thoughts about handing Limas Sweed the deep-threat, third receiver role left vacant by Nate Washington's departure. Of course, it doesn't mean much until a move is made. March 9 - 11:03 a.m. ET

not that the steelers need a 37 year old WR who stands 5'11" who only played in 9 games last year
but he did have a 1,000 yeard season the year before that and maybe he can still get deep

anyone have any views on him?

likely just a one season stop-gap while sweed comes along

The question is...how much will he cost? The dude can catch...and he used to be pretty fast...

He's from Bellaire, OH - maybe he wants to come home.

I'm not sure if this guy is healthy or not. Last year was a rough one for him but as pointed out he had 1,000 the year before and each of the two seasons before that. If he can run, and he comes cheap, he would be a good pickup - at least until training camp. Foot injuries seem to linger for some reason. I looked up that he was to earn 2 mill with 250k roster bonus with the Bucs this year. Maybe we get him for 1.5mill or whatever his class minimum. I am surprised the Pats haven't picked him up yet.

I'll chalk this up to a "look, we aren't just taking a nap through free agency" move. Galloway would not make a good Steeler. And he's old. Real old. Give me a break. Don't start adding super old free agents. I'd be surprised if they signed him. It's just a gesture to pretend they don't play give up during free agency.

What if hines, holmes or ward goes down for a month, sometimes I wonder if you guys think!

galloway= insurance policy if sweeds not ready or someone goes down, he would not be brought in here to catch 70 balls for 800 yds, more like 25 for 250....

The steelers probably had this plan all along. bring in a veteran reciever for a yr or 2 , till sweeds ready , instead of paying nate for 5 yrs...

But Galloway is not a fit for this team. He's a selfish, "playa" type of player. Or he used to be. Why not add someone to the roster who can produce for more than 1 year? Someone who doesn't creak like the Tin man when he's running down field?

I wouldn't complain if Galloway could contribute in the capacity of a possession receiver. The fact is that Sweed is an unknown as of right now. We have Martin Nance in the wings and maybe a draft pick, but if Holmes or Ward goes down, we're in trouble. Adding a slightly over-the-hill veteran receiver wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Yeah we think darthsteel - the guy missed almost the entire season last year. Did you think of that?

He's turning 38 this season. He had only 13 catches last year. I mean, you really think this is the best we can do? Why not sign Jerry Rice?

Just because we could use depth at WR does _____NOT_____ mean that depth should come in the form of a player who had 13 catches last year and turns 38 next season.

My GOD some of you need to splash some cold water on your faces.

They should be looking at players such as Ronald Curry, Drew Bennett or Reggie Williams. You know, guys who aren't in their late 30s.

This is an exercise in trying to trick the fans into thinking they aren't being lax in free agency, but they are.

If you're looking for a good 3rd option possesion type receiver Bennett would be a viable option. He could also bring back the WR pass as he was a college QB. He has good size as well.

supposedly he ran a 4.3 for them which is most likely faster then any wr we have on the roster, so basically he is still the 1000 yd reciever if he's healthy even at age 38. Considering the stillers only pass about 28 times a game and spread it out so much to different reciever sthere is a good chance he would stay healthy and be very effective in a limeted role when his number is called.
They dont go 3 wide more then a handfull of times in a game , so joey would be fresh all season and able to give the team vintage galloway on the few series of plays hes called on per game.

From what I am hearring , the question is can the steelers persuade him to be a the 3rd wr at x amount of dollars for 1 season, Not if they want him, if its he wants them at on thier terms.

I remember when Joey was drafted, he said he always wanted to be a Steeler. Grew up a fan.

It's tough to get excited about the prospect of a 37YO anything visiting the Steelers, much less a receiver coming off an injury.

Steelers should focus on young free agents under 28 -- and those who play DL, OL and DB.

And with regard to WR -- let's see what Sweed and Nance have. I mean it's the third and fourth receiver we're talking about here. It's not like we're talking about replacing Holmes or Ward. And Miller's still a target on this team. We can let a guy on the roster develop. WR is not a worry spot, even after losing Nate.

Galloway is one of those athletes that will stay fast till he chooses to hang up the cleats. I don't doubt his ability to explode even at his current age. My guess is that Pittsburgh may be interested in confirming this. A sort of round about way to scout what soon maybe the competition.

In my closet there is an #84 Seahawks jersey that I got the day before he caught the longest pass of his career. 8-) Galloway is a player that is more than likely looking for somewhere he can contribute consistently every week on Sundays.
