What teams still need a starting QB?

Postby hschultz » Sat Feb 28, 2009 8:29 pm

Just wondering what our chances are to keep Leftwich (and cut Batch) as our back-up. If he's not going to have an honest shot to compete for the starting job somewhere, I have to think he'd prefer to be the back-up here rather than anywhere else. Sure would like to see him in B&G again next season, just in case...

Stillthere;

Good list of possible teams but a few on the list he will not be guaranteed to start for.

AZ no way he starts even if Warner walks.
Buffalo will give Edwards another year.
Clev has too much locked up in Anderson and Quinn

Like all other FA moves this one will come down to money and what others are willing to throw his way in guarantees. Any of the other teams on the list need a starter but is lefty the long term answer? I say probably not. Thus he will start for 1-2 years until the QB of the future is drafted and groomed. If he can get 3 mil a year plus a signing bonus he should take it and leave the Steelers.

However, with Pgh he could get 1-1.5M a year. Stick around for 6 years and not get his ass kicked and be on a good team that will compete for years to come. I like Batch and he is a burgh guy. However, Lefty wins the age battle.

Good post Hagerstown. That list is mostly teams that have a starter. Lefty would rather be a backup here than anywhere, I mean anywhere, and he has said that

So that leaves only teams that would bring him in to start. He would get crippled in Detroit within 5 games and he must know that. I am going to say that the team most likely is the Jets. They have a good enough OL and they have shit for starters. Maybe the Vikings or even the Bears. Those 3 teams and thats it

BL never said he has to go to a team with a guaranteed starting role, just a __chance__ to win the starting job. That won't happen in PGH, hence he will go to one of the teams with weak QB units. End of story. Next.

Batch's days are done. He was a good back up but his age and decline in qb skills have made him expendable. Without BL who's our second string, Dixon?

Well, I've been waiting for someone to start a Cassel to the Chiefs thread, but this will have to do.

The Chiefs will be looking to their backups within 8 weeks of the season.

ANY QUARTERBACK who DOESN'T have a great season with Randy fucking Moss, Wes fucking Welker, and an impenetrable offensive line, doesn't even belong in the AFL.

Tyler Thigpen should have kept his job. He wasn't half bad.

Teresa Varley, of Steelers.com, reports unrestricted free-agent QB Charlie Batch (collarbone) has been throwing while increasing the distance thrown as well as increased velocity and repetitions. Batch said he would like to re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I'll bet he would. He knows this is the only chance he has at a payday before he moves on to his life's work.

I'm a Batch fan but the guy isn't exactly durable. Steelers were VERY lucky that Byron was available last year and that Ben made it through the year relatively healthy. With no new faces on the O-line thus far in the offseason I for one would like to find a better alternative to Batch which begs the questions is Dixon ready to play? Would Leftwich be open to returning if he is not guaranteed a starting job elsewhere?
