The Steelers have tendered one-year contracts to three of their restricted free agents, including starting right tackle Willie Colon, while they have parted ways with enigmatic safety Anthony Smith.

Colon, tight end Sean McHugh and cornerback Anthony Madison can field offers from other teams when free agency starts Friday at 12:01 a.m. The Steelers however, get the right to match offers made to any of the three.

In the case of Colon, the Steelers would get a first-round draft pick as compensation if he signs elsewhere.

The Steelers did not extend tender offers to Smith or outside linebacker Arnold Harrison. Smith showed a lot of promise as a rookie but he quickly fell out of favor with the Steelers and played sparingly last season. A third-round draft pick in 2006, Smith did not dress for the Super Bowl earlier this month.

Harrison played for the Steelers in 2006-07 but missed last season because of a knee injury.

The Steelers issued three one-year contract tenders to their restricted free agents today -- tackle Willie Colon, fullback Sean McHugh and cornerback Anthony Madison.

Safety Anthony Smith, a third-round draft pick in 2006, did not receive a tender and he now becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Each of the three tendered players maintains the Steelers' rights to match any offer they might receive. Colon received a tender of $2,198,000, which means if he signed elsewhere and the Steelers did not match, they would receive a first-round draft pick in return.

McHugh and Madison received the low tenders of $1.01 million, maintaining the Steelers rights to match. McHugh would bring a seventh-round pick if they did not match, but Madison would not because he was not a drafted player.

Linebacker Arnold Harrison, their other restricted free agent, did not receive a tender and will become unrestricted, as will tight end Jon Dekker, who did not receive a tender as an exclusive rights player.

Two exclusive rights players did receive tenders: fullback Carey Davis and guard Jeremy Parquet.

yeah. He loved to hit his own teammates as hard as he could (who was it, oh yeah, Hines Ward) during mini-camp drills.

I am stoked that we hung on to Sean McHugh. He is a solid run blocker...if only Arians would use him more in that capacity.

I also liked Smith. It really should not have been that difficult for him to learn how to keep recievers in front of him. If he could do that, he would be an upgrade from Ryan Clark. Alas, he is gone.
