Why do the lions and bengals suck?
What makes a good franchise? A quick look at the draft results of the Lions, Bengals and Steelers starting with the 2002 draft. I only took players from the 1st or 2nd round, I am sure I missed a few but got the basics covered.
Lions:
Joey Harrington, Kalimba Edwards
Charles Rogers, Boss Bailey
Roy Williams,Teddy Lehman
Mike Williams, shaun cody
Ernie Sims, Daniel Bullocks
Calvin Johnson, Drew Stanton
Gosder Cherilus, Jordon Dizon
Steelers:
simmons, randle el
troy, alonzo jackson
big ben, coke
holmes
timmons, woodley
rashard, sweed
Bengals:
levi jones, Lamont Thompson
palmer, Eric Steinbach
chris perry, Keiwan Ratliff
David Pollack, odel thruman
Johnathan Joseph, Andrew Whitworth
Leon Hall,Kenny Irons
keith "ward done broke me jaw" rivers, Jerome Simpson
Well there ya go folks, I don't need to explain why the Lions and Bengals always suck, those results make that very clear. The amazing thing is that even those the steelers on average were drafting much lower they still had much better results. I, and I am sure any GM, would take the steelers drafts over both the lions and bengals.
I am now starting to wonder, Do the steelers just draft better or do they have a better system in place to get the most out of their picks? Had pittsburgh drafted Roy Williams and Chris Perry, would they be top notch WR's today?

Re: Why do the lions and bengals suck?
Good analysis.
One thing with the Steelers they tend not to draft head cases and folks with questionable pasts. Not that we have not had a few (Plexico, F. Gibson,). Plus Tonio has had his issues.
But as a whole they do not stretch to fill a need and appear to do their due dilligence to make sure a player will be a fit in our system and the team concept.
Just my 2 cents.

Kind of a double-edged sword, in that two members of the Stillers FO
(Ron Hughes and Kevin Colbert) came from........Detroit. To be fair, several
of the Lions' and Bengals' choices (Lehman, Bailey, Pollack, Rivers) were derailed
by injury. However, a glaring number (Harrington, C. Rogers, M. Williams, Thurman,
Edwards, Jones, Perry) were either abject headcases or thugs. Roy Williams
(the WR) famously opined that Detroit practiced harder than his current squad,
South America's Team.
Pittsburgh does better than most when working a draft board; Pola, BR7, ARE,
Santokio for example. Yes, they do miss: Colclough, Zo Jackson. Who would have
known that Simmons would contract adult-onset diabetes and blow an Achilles?
They do miss a bunch when spending high picks for OLs; Tom Ricketts, Jamain Stephens,
John Rienstra come to mind; Faneca being a notable exception (and he also had epilepsy,
which was not a hidden fact, even at LSU).
It comes down to doing one's due diligence before the fact, knowing what you're
looking for, sometimes doing the unexpected and necessary, and having football people
and allowing them to do their jobs. Detroit and Cincinnati are rudderless and have
been for some time; Pittsburgh is not and has the hardware to prove it.

ARE is NOT a good player, never was or never is. I don't see how you can put him among the list with Ben, Troy, Heath, Woodley, etc.. He made one play in the Superbowl and now everyone considers him an elite player. He's a #3 receiver at best and I'd pick Nate Nate over him. Look at him with the Redskins at the #2 spot. They can't even score any points.
