Report: Steelers sign Leftwich and Culpepper

WTF? They signed both?
Batch is only supposed to miss 6 weeks and we sign 2 QBs?
This must really mean Dixon is going to the practice squad for sure.

Interesting move.
Looks like we've seen the last of Batch in Black & Gold.

I agree. Those are two very recognizable names. You'd think the media would all over it. The Steelers official website doesn't even have anything yet.

Re: Steelers sign Leftwich and Culpepper
im really starting to think profootballtalk started this rumor and that their source was some scrub. however, they have been right in the past... so who knows?
i believe holcomb is also a free agent.
i just dont see the point in bringing in both guys. once batch is healthy they would be # 3 and # 4 on the depth chart anyways.

I have my doubts also. TSN is the only major media reporting both have been signed.

If we sign anybody, it will be Holcomb. Arians and Holcomb worked back together in Cleveland in 2004.
Starks for RT in 2008.
Max Starks- 17.5 sacks in 4 seasons.
Willie Colon- 12.25 sacks in 1 season.
You do the math. Now, who do you want starting at RT??

Either way Batch will be back and he will resign. He knowsthe system is very well liked and is a local boy who does a lot for the community. He has done everything he has been asked to do. If they were unhappy with his abilities or he was asking too much money they would have brought someone else in last year. Plus they will have to pay both of these losers more than Batch. BL or Culpucker I don't like either one but BL fits our system a little better

Why so Sure Batch will be back?
There are lots of reasons he won't be back next season.
He will be a UFA after this season.
He is an 11 year vet, so his minimum salary is still a bigger number under the cap.
He is 33 years old.
He can not stay healthy.
Tomlin didn't bring him in.

add to it ,
He does not have the skills to run this type of offense, he was brought in when this was a run and throw on 3rd and short game plan!
When he was asked to throw alot in the cincy game he was throwing hanging breaking balls which nearly got a few of our wideouts killed last yr. did the same shit to sweed almost the other day!
he was a good fit for the 04-05 team , but not the 07-08 offense...

Re: Report: Steelers sign Leftwich and Culpepper
I don't see on any site other than pft that either of these QBs have been signed. One thing I did read that I found interesting is that Leftwich would not work out unless a deal is done. Kinda makes me wonder if he is hiding something himself. Could this be the reason for the rumored Culpepper signing?
Re: Report: Steelers sign Leftwich and Culpepper
Pittsburgh Post Gazette online states Leftwich was chosen over Culpepper. According the the PPG, they only signed Leftwich.

I can live with Leftwich. Culpepper scares me.

I think this is good news that only Leftwich was signed. I don't really see the point in signing both. Leftwich could make a solid backup QB in the league and there is no point in having both. Especially with having a rookie draft pick at QB and Batch coming back soon.

huge upgrade in arm strength over batch,
http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d809eac00
No way batch is in playing condition in 4-6 weeks , more like 8-12 at best ..
To me this is a huge upgrade at backup qb, batch was nowhere near the calibre qb leftwich was when you compare the two qb's at thier best. With leftwich in game shape and knowing a good portion of the playbook I would have some confidence the steelers could pull off some wins in that last 8 game stretch if ben happens to go down for a few weeks.

I've always like Leftwich, mainly because of that video when he was in college of him breaking his shin and staying in the game for comeback victory (two of his lineman literally carried him up the field between plays).
That said, I think we should temper our enthusiasm a bit. There's a reason he was unemployed almost halfway through August. He isn't very mobile in the pocket and doesn't show alot of awareness for getting away from the rush. Also, he has about a 10 minute windup on his throws that defenses really started to pick up on the more they played against him.
I agree that he could be valuable in some spot duty, but I don't know how comfortable I'd be with him for an extended stretch. Let's not forget that our O-line isn't particularly fond of this pass blocking stuff. Having a QB with known mobility issues and slow-ass release could be a problem.

I remember that game also. Leftwich is a good signing given who was available.
Man, does TSN have egg on its face after reporting that both QBS were signed.
