Nate, take Foote with you

Postby steelmoney » Fri Feb 27, 2009 10:07 am

2:13 a.m. — Report: Nate Washington to visit Lions
Former Steelers wide receiver Nate Washington will visit the Detroit Lions on Friday, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Washington and Calvin Johnson could form a nice duo for a Lions team that lacks certainty at quarterback.

I don't know about everyone else here, but losing Nate kinda makes me nervous. Ya he had his drops but he made alot of plays when he had to. Im not sold on Sweed. He beat defenders in college with his speed. The dbs in the NFL are faster and he just can't rely on his speed anymore. His route running is also suspect. I think Tomlin made a mistake not playing him at all this season. Just delayed his progress. Should be interesting to see how he develops.

Sweed didn't play much because Tomlin's #1 goal was to win, and Sweed showed he wasn't ready time and time again. I don't know about you, but when the season ends up with a Super Bowl ring, I think the coach handled things just fine!

Remember it took Nate 4 yrs to cement himself as the #3 receiver.

I did expect more from Sweed last year as a 2nd round pick. However, you could have said the same about Tonio's year as well until the playoffs hit.

Sweed has work to do without a doubt. However, if he makes the two catches in playoffs (one against SD and one against the Ravens) he would be labeled as the 2nd coming of John Stallworth.

I still say we have a 20% chance to see Nate as a Steeler next year. However, if he walks I am willing to bet that Sweed has numbers comparable to what Nate had this year. 40 catches, 600 yards, and about 4-5 TD's.

I'm not sold on Sweed. The Steelers will let us know if they are or not if they draft a WR in the top 3 rounds. In the meantime, I hope Sweed's wrist injury wasn't completely healed. I hope he sees a shrink to get some self confidence. I hope the Steelers draft Brian Robiske in the 2nd round. The loss of McFadden makes that a longshot. Steelers will focus on OL, DL, and DB in first 3 rounds.

Sweed had moments where he looked like an absolute baffoon on the field. How many drops did he have last season? He dropped 5 yard slants, 50 yard bombs and everything inbetween. I'd feel much more confident if we had Nate back. Without Nate what is our depth at WR? Ward (one of my all time favorite Stillers, but getting up there in age), Holmes (a no show for most of the regular season), Sweed (absolutely worthless this season....I know, I know he was a rookie) and then who?

Nate would be the classic "stupid organization" signing e.g. Larry Brown to the Raiders or Randal El to the Redskins. It's like some franchises get their player ratings from the most google hits. Some dumbasses out there in the league will hear Nate mentioned 1000 times post-Super Bowl then throw a ton of money at him. I've got a lot of sympathy for Detroit for what the city has been going through of late, but does the front office have to run things like a bunch of drooling tards, too?

Nate's visiting Tennessee and I have a feeling they're not going to let him leave. SF signed Brandon Jones and Roydell Williams was injured and is a FA. They have nothing on that roster. If you're like me and are concerned Sweed not the answer at WR, then maybe you'll like the suggestion to draft Brian Robiske...the anti-sweed. He is the most polished WR in the draft. He's got GREAT hands and runs perfect routes. Robiske a strong blocker as well. He's nearly as tall as Sweed and is a far more confident player. He impressed senior bowl week and had a great combine. Ward is playing in the last year of his contract and no telling if Holmes Super Bowl MVP was enough for the Rooney's to forgive him for his other bowl. I'd consider him in the 2nd round...IF by some super long shot the Steelers re-sign McFadden or pick up a corner in FA. Although Scheffter reporting the Steelers have a renewed interest in re-signing him, I just don't see Whiz missing the opportunity to exact a small measure of revenge by signing one of our quality players.
