Big Ben played super bowl with broken ribs

Postby steelmoney » Mon Feb 09, 2009 1:14 pm

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played the Super Bowl with broken ribs, SI.com's Peter King has reported.

Coach Mike Tomlin had denied any injury problem with Roethlisberger in the week before the Super Bowl.

Roethlisberger was seen stretching his mid-torso region throughout the week and apparently was comfortable in the game, going 21-for-30 with 256 yards and the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter to Santonio Holmes.

Roethlisberger also threw an interception and was sacked three times. The Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23.

"Fractured ribs,'' Roethlisberger told SI.com. "Luckily, in the game, I didn't take any big hits to make 'em hurt. But I knew all along there was something wrong. There wouldn't have been anything they could have done about fractured ribs anyway. It was just suck it up and play.''

Roethlisberger was drilled in the back by a helmet during the AFC title game against the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 18 and did not leave the game, though backup Byron Leftwich hurriedly warmed up.

Yeah, but we all hate how he is such a drama queen and pretends to be hurt all the time, right?

Earlier this year a response to my defense of BR7 asked me if I was his mom or something. Where are all the doubters now? Where are all the people who wanted to bench him and start Lefty? Ben shoulda been super bowl MVP. Tonio had a big game, but don't forget his final TD catch was his second chance, because he didn't make the play the first time on a catchable ball.

No other QB coulda got us a Lombardi this year, with the o-line we had. Warner, Brady, the good Manning, they all need their 3 seconds of pocket protection to make a play. There were times when Ben was ducking D-linemen before he could complete a 2nd read.

It's been pointed out how many games Tomlin has lost losing a lead in the 4th quarter; think how many there would have been had Ben not engineered a come-from-behind-V in the 4th quarter. Sobering thought. For the first time since Bradshaw we have a QB who can bring us back late in the 4th. The Steelers are a system team; since 1972, we've been in contention almost all the time. We had teams that make the AFC championship games in the 80s and 90s but no Lombardi. The difference with this decade is we got Ben.

On an aside, another bad call we got was the unneccesary roughness when our DB followed the receiver into the cardinals sideline. A little shoving ensues and somehow it's our boy amonst the sea of red jerseys who gets flagged.

Yeah, but we Stiller fans have come to accept that from Ben, being a drama king. The media seems to be the only entity that feeds into his antics. The media wants nothing more to pound hype, drama into all sports.

Ben is a tough S.O.B...the ultimate gamer...the media knows little about Ben...many of them still consider Ben nothing more than a ''game manager''...Ha!!!

Well, it's hard to evolve out of that game manager status when you're on a team that tries to focus on the run. The fact that he's still done legendary things in that type of offense, makes it all the more amazing.

And at the same time, Ben has shown what he can do when the offense is focused on him and not the run game in the 05' run.

fractured toes redux?

team is saying there was no fracture on the xray pre-superbowl
ben is confirming that, saying the break was evident on an mri taken after the game...

Are you talking about the call on Ike?

Ike was a dumbass on that play and deserved a flag. However, there were some people on the AZ sideline (including Whiz) who could have been flagged also.

Yeah, I'm referring to Ike's dumass move by Ike on the Cardinals sideline. Do you really need to throw the flag for that? It used to be, the zebra's would throw a flag but call it on both teams. No harm, no foul.
