After further (and really late) review

Postby GodfatherofSoul » Sun Feb 08, 2009 12:09 am

Just some notes I wanted to jot down after watching the Super Bowl over again before I forget them. The game has a MUCH different feel when you're watching from home as opposed to sitting with 150 fan club members. Apologizes in advance if I'm repeating anyone else's posted comments:

  • Good Gawd! The entire broadcast was set up as a "Remember the Seahawks" cryfest by Al Michaels and John Madden. There were constant snipes about reffing, the disparity in penalty yards, the mere presence of Mike Holmgren who had no other reason to be there made it clear that they were setting up for a post-game excuse-fest. Fuck you and your shitty video game, Madden!
  • I think the Cardinals were coached to get chippy in the game as some sort of intimidation tactic. There was a lot of post-whistle antics I noticed, some the camera wouldn't pan over to or they wouldn't replay. Dockett was especially at it. After the TD run, he slung Russell back across the goal line. He also did something to Parker when he was on the ground after the play right in front of a ref (hard to see what it was). I think it was Davis again being thrown to the ground out of bounds.
  • This has to be the weirdest play I've seen from Troy. At the 0:18 second mark in the second quarter on the play where Boldin gets the first down, WTF was Troy doing? He jumps right on to Willie Gay instead of the receiver!
  • I counted FIVE holds on Harrison that weren't called. And, when they finally DID call one, it should have been for a FACEMASK!!! On the play where the Warner fumble is called a forward pass, check out the choke hold they have on Harrison.
  • Now, this one is on us. At the 10:44 mark in the 3rd quarter, check out what Stapleton does to #94. We got away with a personal foul there.
  • Terrible series of calls after the "roughing the holder" penalty that gave us a fresh set of downs. I'm a big fan of keeping up the run game even when it's not working, but a base run from 1st and goal at around the 5 yard line?
  • Funny comparison in Cowher/Whisenhunt late game comments I noticed from some NFL Films soundbites. During Super Bowl XL, Ben was constantly making snotty comments to Cowher about "not playing to lose." Nevermind that he threw an almost pick six after Cowher put the game in his hands. Anyway, near the end of the game Cowher says to Ben, "...I'm proud of you." To which Ben replied, "There's still time left." Fast forward to the SB XLIII. With 2 minutes on the clock, Whisenhunt says the exact same thing to Fitzgerald! To which he replied, "There's still 2 minutes on the clock..."
  • Just after the final Fitzgerald TD pass, Madden starts on a tirade about how the Steelers D didn't get it done. Asshole!
  • Woodley has a Wolverine tatoo! And, not the crappy brown suit, but the old school yellow suit.

One last note. We have to acknowledge Mike Tomlin for NOT PLAYING FOR THE TIE! He could have easily sat down on the ball and ran it or passed conservatively as soon as we had a decent shot at the field goal. As Santonio said, choose to be great!

This is too good of a post to go left with no reply's. I am going to have to agree with you, esp your comment about when Troy guessed wrong and ran into Gay on that pass to Boldin, which resulted into a good gain and a first down. Another thing I agree with is Coach T not going for the the field goal to tie, and realized he had the game in the hands of 7 and decided to take that route, even though Hines was more comfortable calming the offense down and reminding Ben he only needs 3 to tie. Kudos to Tomlin and esp. Ben for not being afraid of becoming a legend.

Another thing regarding Woodley's tat.. he decided to go the opposite direction of the "Michigan" Wolverine, and decided to get the cartoon of Wolverine instead. I think it's pretty kickass.

Absolutely right on your last note. Loved that we went for the win, no holds barred!! I bet Cowher, as much as I respect what he did for us, would have played it safe and we would have ended up with a FG and a toss up in OT

I must agree with you on almost every point except that Madden football is a great game.

Madden is a douchebag but the game that bears his name still kicks ass. As a consolation, he only lends his name to the game these days.

I was watching NFL network after the game and they mentioned that Troy went through two pairs of contact lenses, and had a 3rd pair brought from a local eye care store at the half. He did have some weird miscues in the game - taking out Gay being one. They showed a trainer helping him with them early in the game. Perhaps that had something to do with it.
