AC20 Steelers Mock Draft Version 3.0

Postby anthonyc20 » Sat Feb 07, 2009 2:25 am

Assuming the Steelers just have 7 picks, 1 per round (which obviously wont be the case)

Round 1
Duke Robinson OG Oklahoma
Height: 6-5. Weight: 330.
Projected 40 Time: 5.28.
Projected Round (2009): 1-2.

Out of all the elite linemen in this class, Robinson is the only one with a chance to be had at 32. This also means the steelers could move up or down, but Duke Robinson would be a solid choice. Robinson was the best guard in college football by a longshot, and the only elite guard prospect to be had. While I see tackle as a higher need, Robinson is too good to pass up. He was a first team all American pick, and was so good he almost declared for the draft last year as a junior (and might have fell to the Steelers) which is rare for a Guard.

Round 2
Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest
Height: 5-8. Weight: 193.
Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
Projected Round (2009): 2-3.

A shut down corner. No one threw his way all year, and when they did he'd either pick it off or knock it down. 15 interceptions the last two years. First team selection and now the career interceptions leader for the ACC. His height isn't ideal, but he showed that he can be physical if need be by getting 3 sacks his sophomore and junior seasons. Blocked kicks on special teams, and could be a potential kick returner. I'd love this pick, especially if McFad doesn't resign.

Round 3
Eric Wood C Louisville
Height: 6-4. Weight: 304.
Projected 40 Time: 5.09.
Projected Round (2009): 3.

49 consecutive starts and a first team all big east selection, exactly the kind of stability the Steelers need on the o-line. Good team guy, has the talent to be moved to either guard position as well. The best pass blocking center in the draft and 4 out of 5 times he'd be the number 1 center in the draft. Could improve his stock come draft day.

Round 4
Terrance Taylor DT Michigan
Height: 6-0. Weight: 317.
Projected 40 Time: 5.11.
Projected Round (2009): 3-4.

He will probably fall to day 2 because of a lack of production his Senior season. A very efficient run stopper who flourished while playing with a certain Steeler linebacker, he could replace Hampton by the end of 2009. A 320 pound tackle who has broken the 5.0 mark on the 40 would be a great addition to the best defense in the NFL.

Round 5
Garrett Reynolds OT North Carolina
Height: 6-7. Weight: 310.
Projected 40 Time: 5.23.
Projected Round (2009): 5-6.

Another rock who started 26 games for the 'Heels, Reynolds is a huge tackle. He isn't that strong but he has great feet for his size. He was the team captain his Senior season, and his durability makes him an attractive prospect.

Round 6
Brian Hartline WR Ohio State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 186.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Projected Round (2009): 7-FA

Hartline made an odd decision by declaring early after a down season, but I think he could turn into a decent 3 or 4 receiver. He could use some more size and strength, but the route running ability and hands are there. Its not his fault Ohio State never got the passing game going this year, they were rotating a freshman running back and a useless senior in and out of the quarterback position. The Steelers might lose Nate Washington and Limas Sweed doesn't seem to be ready to take over the #3 receiver role. I think Hartline is a solid player, his hands are definitely superior to Sweed's.

Round 7
Russell Allen OLB/ILB San Diego State
Height: 6-3. Weight: 235.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2009): 7

Why would the Steelers waste a pick on an undersized player from an awful college team? Because this guy is all over the field, and could be a demon on special teams. 22 tackles against Utah... 22. San Diego State has actually produced some decent defensive players in recent years, including ILB Kirk Morrison. The Steelers would be smart to pick up a linebacker that could tear it up on special teams.

Some UDFA's the Steelers could look at:
Nate Longshore QB California
Height: 6-5. Weight: 233.
Projected 40 Time: 4.88.
Projected Round (2009): FA.

Probably need to pick up a QB at some point. Longshore actually has a very very good arm.

Britton Colquitt P Tennessee
Height: 6-3. Weight: 205.
Projected Round (2009): FA.

Even a drunk could kick better than Berger, and Colquitt is one of those drunks (DUI arrest). But if anything happens to Sepulveda or hes not ready to go, we have to have a better backup plan. Colquitt is a pretty good punter. I never thought I'd miss Josh Miller as much as I did this year, it was absolutely putrid

Garry Williams OT Kentucky
Height: 6-3. Weight: 300.
Projected 40 Time: 5.26.
Projected Round (2009): FA.

Solid player in college who isn't supposed to get drafted. Probably could start for the Steelers anyway.

.
First off, I love the players in this mock...were it to occur.
Alas, some of the players will not be available for the Steelers.

Duke - will go in the 20s.
Smith - will go early in R2
Wood - I had put Wood in that exact same spot, as well. Alas, I now think he goes late R2.
Taylor - I love this pick, especially in R4.
Allen - I love this pick. As you said, SDSU have produced some great defensive players in the recent years. He would be available in R7.

Again, if those players dropped and/or were available, I would deem this to be an excellent draft.

The OL pick in 1st (if we go this way) will depend on the following.

1. Who is available (no shit)
2. Player who has versatility (Mack is attractive)
3. How they are in interviews and during team visits.

The Steelers for the most part have not drafted head cases and I expect that to continue.

I like the DL pick in the 4th round if available. The steelers don't need the sexy DL picks typically associated with the 1st/2nd round guys. We just need blue collar guys that can eat up blocks and push up field.
