Re: New Article: Loose Slag from The Still Mill
Lost amidst the excitement of Harrison’s 100-yard INT return was the fact that Larry Fitz, who made the tackle, actually ran out of bounds the final 37-some yards before finally coming back in bounds to tackle Harrison. There is a rule on punt coverage and KO coverage about a defender freely running OOB and then coming back in bounds (he can’t be the first guy to hit the ballcarrier). Not sure what rule applies in this INT situation, but amidst the 28 replays NBC showed, this was never mentioned or discussed. Was this a penalty? Had Harrison been ruled down at the 1-inch line, would the penalty have given us a referee-appointed TD (since Fitz was the tackler who made the “stopâ€), or would it have been a crack at Tomlin’s ever-popular 18-yard FG, since the half cannot end on a penalty? Just food for thought.
Yes, as a defensive player you are absolutely allowed to run out of bounds and come back in to make the tackle. I believe the Arizona newspaper pointed out another tidbit; in his jaunt out of bounds Larry Fitzgerald actually collides with Antrel Rolle, who isn't even on the field for the play! It temporarily slows him up, and gets to Harrison a split second too late.
I’m still perplexed by the Harrison “unnecessary roughness†penalty in the 4Q. You're SUPPOSED to maul the opposing player, who is SUPPOSED to get downfield and maul YOUR punt returner. There never was a PUNCH thrown. There was a THRUST of the hand and a forearm shiver, which is how EVERY BLOCKER in the league blocks in today’s brand of football. It’s a PUNT RETURN, and Harrison is supposed to be BLOCKING, is he not? And at the end of that skirmish, it was a 2-handed SHOVE -- ie, a BLOCK -- while the play was still LIVE. I hadn't realized that blocking in the CHEST of a defender on a punt return was now illegal in the NFL.
From the replay it looks as if the ball is already downed, but you can't hear a whistle, so I don't know either way. But I can't find this in the NFL Rulebook anywhere, but I am pretty damned sure that it is illegal to block below the waist on any kick formation. If someone can back me up, it would be awesome. Francisco could have been possibly flagged on the play for a blatant dive at Harrison's moneymakers.
Good stuff.

Re: New Article: Loose Slag from The Still Mill
Of course, Cowher must suck because Tomlin won a Super Bowl. No, one has nothing to do with the other. Tomlin looks like he will be a top-notch coach, as was Cowher. Both are a credit to the Rooneys and the Steelers organization.
Anyone heard from Bill Cowher? Ya, just about EVERY time a job comes open and he is the NUMBER 1 choice of every owner. But of course, those owners and GMs are nowhere near as "insightful" as the Mill. And, hell, those GMs don't watch "tape" like the Mill. Hell, their game tape doesn't even include ads for "Chuck".
And of course, Dick Lebeau sucks. Again, this is an observation that only Mill is "insightful" enough to know. Hell, the fact that his players wear his 44 jersey as a statement of how much they respect him and believe he should be in the Hall of Fame, how outside of this Web site I have yet to hear ANYONE disparage Lebeau. But, of course, the whole band is out of step except my kid, right Mill?
Congrats Steelers, Super Bowl champs!

Mill:
Outstanding post. One question: Was the flag thrown on Harrison on the punt return for conduct during the play or for what I recall as a blatant punch when the play must have been dead?
Harrison gets the Hard Hat for the year; I think Ben is due one for the SB game. I realize now that while Arians is certainly less than stellar (I am being generous), the erratic-at-best offensive line came close to costing the Steelers the game because the Steelers came away with only six points despite nine opportunities from inside the 10. A touchdown on either drive puts the game away. The Steelers have to have one of the worst offensive lines ever to win a SB - and I acknowledge the line made great improvements throughout the season. This was a very special team, considering how it came together after the Indi loss to put itself in a position to cruise through the playoffs and rally to beat the Cardinals.

Great article Mill.
One thing you forgot to mention. Why didn't Warner get a personal foul penalty for removing his helmet ,when he was complaining to the officals about the first fumble/forward pass? If anyone was deserving of a penalty it was Warner.
Just my opinion.

I wish people would stop squawking about refs and the calls, but it is an offense to see Kurt's mug out in the open like that.

We won so I could give a shit about the calls. Mill was talking about some bullshit calls or non calls and I was just throwing in one that was missed.

Yeah, and now Pitt offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh is expected to accept a position today as the New York Jets quarterback's coach. Yes, the same Matt Cavanaugh who "engineered" the WORST offense to ever win a Super Bowl (2000 Ravens) and the OC whose Pitt offense scored 0 (ZERO) points in the Sun Bowl 6 weeks ago. Yes, that pile of shit, Mattt Cavanaugh. So, yeah, Cowhard's name "coming up every time a job comes open" hardly impresses me. It'll impress a dimwit like yerself, but not me.
Next ?

Was hard to say if the flag was dead ball or not. I didn't think it was dead ball. A punt hangs in the air for 3-4 seconds, plus the Cards had to down it after their coverage man batted it.

So Matt Cavanaugh is being talked about getting $10 million? Cavanaugh got a job. He wasn't being pursued by owners like paparrazi chasing Brittany Spears the way Cowher was (or will be). Have you heard his name mentioned elsewhere? Have you heard his name mentioned as a potential Hall of Fame candidate? Is there a Web site put up by a team's fan base begging their owner to hire Cavanaugh? (Browns fans have such a site for Cowher).
So, um, ya, they're comparable.

I've never once heard Billy Cowhard's name being mentioned for the HALL OF FAME. Then again, any IDIOT could mention it, and only a fool would place any value on "hearing his name mentioned".
There are a lot of retreads getting hired all over the league. Again, while that apparently impresses the dulllards like yerself, it hardly impresses me. I'm actually looking forward to The Mailman, Billy Cowhard, getting some stones and taking a job, just so we can watch him flop right on his face.

Still, I do not agree with you on everything...but I always have on Cowher...he had his moments...but most of them were horrible...i feel sorry for the team that eventually pays him a lot of money...and in Stiller Nation...his big legend can now be the only coach of our super bowl winning coaches to lose a SB.
I also think you Loose Slag analysis is brilliant!
The uncalled penalties were plenty...and there is no way that was the deciding factor...i think the steelers did plenty to lose....but the Great Plays and Talent of a few of the players pulled us through...
I think the luckiest thing Lebeau has going fr him is not the opposition...but having a player with the internal drive and fortitude like Harrison...
who was the Steelers coordinator in the loss to the cowboys? i remember the play calling was even worse than arians...amazingly...but i blocked the idiotic offensive coordinator's name from my mind???

Erhardt was still the OC, but Chan Gailey called the plays for the Super Bowl.
The 5 wides was Chan's contribution- Erhardt feuded with Cowher over this.

Thanks Jeemie!!!
Erhardt was on the tip of my brain...i tried typing it in...but I was mispelling it...
I do not know if I was aware of Chan taking over plays during that game...I was in one of my best years of college during that superbowl run...
I am glad to have been around for two more!!! keep it coming!

Mill:
Yes, being one of the winningest coaches during his tenure "hardly impresses me." Same as you're "hardly impressed" with Dick LeBeau. I'd like to know who does "hardly impress" you. A man who had among the top records during his tenure doesn't. A man who has, once again, coordinated the No. 1 defense and the Super Bowl champion defense, "hardly impresses" you. Yes, Cowher wasn't as successful as Bill Belichick. I guess that means he's a complete failure, because his record is not quite as good as the best coach in football, maybe the best in history. A poll of NFL people would put LeBeau at the very top of his profession.
The ridiculous standards that some (including you) hold the team, its management, its coaches and many of its players are completely unfair. I can't imagine that fan site writers of many, I'd dare say any, other teams would weekly bash the defensive coordinator of the best defense, statistically, in nearly two decades. This type of negativity makes the Steelers fan base appear spoiled and ignorant.
There's nothing wrong with being objective in evaluating your team. But the key word is "objective." If your team has more Super Bowl titles, 2nd most conference titles and most conference championship game appearances in the league, then the ownership is to be lauded. The management is to be lauded. Most of the players are to be lauded.
And those who believe they always know better than this group of incredibly successful people because they watch more "tape," (again, watching a game on CBS is and saying you're "watching tape" like the NFL is akin to me saying I can give NASCAR drivers advice on the Daytona 500 because I drove from Pittsburgh to Philly and back.

SteelQueer,
Now yer babbling incoherently.
For the record, let's review what YOU wrote before the game, and what I wrote.
Queer: Nothing. Wrote nothing. Gave zero pre-game analysis.
Mill:
1. AZ's 4-wide is their most dangerous weapon vs. PIT. (Check)
2. I really, really like the Woodley vs. Brown matchup. (Check)
3. Arians will fuk the dog and be the largest obstacle to the title. (Check)
4. Larry Foote is 1 of the hugest weak links. (Check)
5. Anticipate heavy run blitzing and the walking of SS Adrian Wilson up to the box in non-3WR/4WR formations. (check)
6. TE Heath Miller must get involved in the passing game as a pass-catcher, not as a sidecar blocker. Quick pop passes and taking advantage of Gerald Hayes’ slowfootedness and Adrian Wilson’s over-aggressiveness on play-action should be a staple this Sunday. (check)
When you know nothing and contribute nothing, it's far better to shut the fuk up than to sit here and pontificate about things you know nothing about.

The people in the NFL who happen to think Lebeau's a great coach can write that kind of a write-up too, Mill.
In fact, they can write rings around that write-up.
It's not Steel'eer you're saying you know more than, or the people who "don't do a write-up".
You're claiming to know more than just about every coach and player that works in the NFL today.
The voices with NFL experience (and who could put your write-ups on your dead little fansite to shame) who think Dick Lebeau belongs in the Hall of Fame are legion.
Since they actually have or have had...you know...actual CAREERS in the NFL, somehow I think they know just a TAD more than someone who writes on a dead fansite.
Of course, it could just be a MASSIVE coincidence/conspiracy that you're not in the NFL, making millions as a coach.

Uh, yer babbling incoherently, which is no surprise, given your history here.
MATT CAVANAUGH was just hired by the Jets to be their QB coach. You know, the same turd that NEVER ONCE developed ANY QB at Pitt, or with the Ravens. The guy who was totally fuking clueless about offensive football. But now he is the QB coach of the Jets. So, that tells us all we need to know about "the voices with NFL experience".
Now, shut the fuck up and run along to school. Your homeroom teacher is going to mark you down for truancy.

Mill:
Yes, you were so prescient.
The Cards will be most effective with their wide-open passing attack? Ya, who could have known that. Larry Foote would be the "weak link"? Yes, the fourth-best starting linebacker in a 3-4 defense would be the least effective, who could have known that. Wilson will have a strong game? Yes, the Cards best or second best defensive player will be effective? Shocking. The Steelers need to find Heath Miller? Yes, who could have possibly thought that, especially with Ward hobbled, that Miller would be an important part of the offense.
What did I write here? Seeing as I'm not a writer for this site, why would I? If I were, however, I hope I would try to come up with more effective analysis than a load of ramblings that do nothing but reinforce my preconceived notions, never letting any facts get in the way of my opinions.
Also, notice that you never refuted anything in my last post. You just rambled about how you were so insightful, with your analysis that stated the obvious.
Oh, but you did call me "queer". You do realize two things, don't you? 1. It's 2009 and 2. Neither of us are 2nd graders (well, at least I'm not.)
