Leftwich looking for starting job next season

Postby thesteelhammer » Thu Jan 29, 2009 9:13 pm

Vic Carucci, of NFL.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Byron Leftwich said he thinks the way he has played in a relief role this season should give him the opportunity to compete for a starting job with another team next season.

Deservedly so. Good luck to Bryron after season and hopes he lands in a good organization as a starting Quarterback in this league. But, for now, lets get that ring!

and which team(s) do we think we'll give him a legit shot at #1 (not the same question as which teams *need* a #1)?

Seattle is in desperate need of a Quarterback, yeah they have Hasselbeck but he's not reliable and had some serious injuries for the most part of this season. Kansas City's quarterback situation is DREADFUL and can use a tune-up there. Tavaris Jackson and Gus Frerote don't seem to be the answer in Minnesota, they will give Jackson another shot, but I think Byron can do wonders there. Given the system, Lefty would make a fabulous west coast Quarterback, and with Gruden gone, maybe Tampa can have a look with him considering his strong arm, and quick release to compete with Garcia.

Obviously right now, he is a dream #2. But he can bid well as a starter next season.

kansas city or detroit will prolly make offers for him, or maybe not. i think they're 1-2 in draft picks so they might just draft a stud QB

but yeah highly unlikely he stays in pittsburgh. he's still a young qb who's starter material. I'm actually surprised no teams made him offers before we did.

Good luck to Byron. You cant hate someone who wants to start. He will always have a place with teh Steelers, I can guarantee you that.

Teams that need him are:
Tampa
Carolina
Buffalo
Philly
Seattle
KC
Jets
Washington
Tennessee

So no matter where he ends up, he has a chance to start. I just hope he knows that if the Starting position isn't guaranteed, he always has a home in the real football town.

i could see him going to carolina. they got a low draft position so likely will be too late to catch any big time qb prospects.

after that horrific performance by jake delhomme with 6 turnovers in the playoffs, i think he's going to be shown the door, or demoted to the bench.

i dont see him going to tenn. i think collins wants to stay, and they also have vince young

tampa's another possibility. philly maybe, i think they eagles staff is too critical on mcnabb though. the guy this year hasn't been great or anything but look at the weapons he has. he's got westbrook and the list stops there. his offense isn't built for running which makes life harder on him. philly doesn't need a new qb, they need a new offensive scheme

Leftwich reported earlier that he was not ruling out Pittsburgh next year because he's had so much fun this year. Of course, Batch wants to be a Steeler next year too so it may present some interesting choices for the organization. Personally, I appreciate what Leftwich has done this year but I've always been a big fan of Charlie Batch. He's my pick of the two.

Why can't they put Dixon on the practice squad, sign Batch and Lefty to short term contracts and then see what comes of it? I really don't want to see BL4 go anywhere the way he was kicked to the curb down in Carolina.

If you put Dixon on practice squad he is free to be claimed by any team in the league. McLovin' likes the idea of having a developmental, athletic qb on the roster. Why give him away to another team. Just plain stupid.

To me the ball is in Mr. Lefty's court on this one. IF wants to stay as a bacup I think Batch's time will be up. I hate to say that as he has done the Steelers right and is a guy from the Burgh.

However, Dixon is the backup of the future.

For Leftwich he has to be careful where he goes. He is not going to go somewhere and be a long term solution. Say he goes to the BEARs, TB, etc. He can start until they draft a 1st or 2nd round pick on the qb of the future. Also, he has to ask himself. Is it better to start for a middle of the road to shitty team or be a back up on a team that has a chance to go to the SB most years.
