Sweed will come around, IMO. At least he gets open and he made a nice catch later on after dropping that sure TD.

SWEED SUCKS. I am sick of this kid. Put him in street clothes until next season.

That was an absolutely horrible drop yesterday, but still, he deserves one more year being a 2nd round pick. A lot of WRs struggled in their first year... Hines and Plax didn't exactly light the world on fire.

That said, it would be wise for them to draft another WR in the first 3 rounds of the draft anyhow. Hines can't play forever.

While Sweed's drop was unacceptable, I have to put the blame (along with most of the offenses troubles) squarely on Arians. Arians has kept Sweed out of the lineup all year. Instead of giving him playing time and allowing him to get used to big-game situations, he confined him to special teams duty for the entire year. There are plenty of other rookie WRs out there (Breaston, D. Jackson) that get ample playing time from which they benefit as well as their respective teams. Sweed is tall, fast, and has great potential. I think Hines did a great job mentoring Holmes and hopefully Sweed will benefit from this as well, b/c we need a guy with his size and speed...just gotta work on the hands!

sweed will be a big player in this leage, judge the the talent not the play. huge blocking skills shows he is open to learning(hines ward) blew past the db with a nice move on the dropped td two weeks in a row which is what he was drafted for(big target that can blow past db's)
came bag and made a few big catches that kept drives moving, laid out a db , stripped walker from intercepting the toss in the endzone...

ya lets cut him for being a 21 yr old , who got starry eyed the last 2 weeks in huge playoff games after he did not play his entire rookie season more then a few plays.

alot of dopes wanting troy cut after his first season, those same dopes wanted timmons cut last season!

1) My brother turned to me and asked, "Does ANYone else hold on this team?"
At first I chuckled, then I realized...the answer is "No."

2) Do not give up on Sweed.
a) He has an uncanny mixture of speed & size.
b) He runs great routes.
c) He gets open...a lot.
d) He has only played, really, in this game.
e) He is yoooung. Ward was not so great his first few years. Thigpen had to get cut before he became any good.
Simply, Sweed reminds me a ton of Vincent Jackson (who, in his first two seasons, dropped a ton of balls for San Diego). Heck, Jackson even placed a live ball on the ground (after a reception)...a la the Plaxico "spike" play. And now...Jackson is a red-zone (tall) and deep threat (speed) combined into one.

In Sweed's defense for this game,
a) He got excited about the TD...and did not look the ball in.
b) He blocked the snot out of that defender (on Heath's run).
c) He knocked the ball out of the DB's hands (on a poorly thrown ball).

3) Gary Russell gets that first down...even against the Ravens.

Good Points Darth Steel

Some of my game day pals were getting down on him...and that catch was not alright...but the fact he came back with a lights out block to a fellow reciever up for some additional yards got him some cred back...and confidence...they need to give him a regular roatation out there to see what he can do...he sure makes big play mistakes though...they really stand out on those newer, bigger tvs

We are lucky the dropped TD did not cost us. Two things he did wrong on the play.
1. Took his eyes off of the ball.
2. It appeared as though he slowed down a bit at the last second which made him stretch more for the ball.

As for giving up on him give me a break. We heard this last year about Timmons and he is going to be a good one. Troy did not start his rookie year either and he was a #1. It has taken Nate Washington 3 yrs to become the #3 receiver.

When Santonio was drafted he would have been relegated to the bench as well. However, El left after the super bowl and he only had Cedric Wilson to over take on the depth chart.

Plus Nate can be a free agent this year. If he leaves Sweed will be our #3 receiver and will develop into a good one.

toomuchmerrillhodge;

Keep in mind Breaston is a 2nd year player who only had 8 catches his rookie year, but he was the primary PR and KR guy. D. Jackson is a talent but he only got playing time with R. Brown and K. curtis banged up.

Jackson got more Playing time this year and probably will next. Plus Philly will pass the ball all over the place. Unless there is an injury to Hines or Tonio he will be a 3-4 receiver for us even next year but the talent is their. (I put him way above Fred Gibson when it comes to true busts).

I have to agree with some of you that Sweed is in his first year and you have to give him some slack. He made a few plays later that got him back in some good graces. But I got one real beef with him, that he got "hurt" after he dropped that sure TD pass. I can remember him doing this before. He was not touched by a sole defender so I expected him to get his ass up and get off of the field, not do the "oh I'm hurt..." nonsense.

Sweed will be a STUD in this league...all of you who are ready to give up on him, just settle down.

That was a big, UGLY drop - the worst was when CBS played it close-up over and over again in slow-mo, with Limas having that "what da" look on his face.
However, I seem to remember Nate-Nate having more than his fair share of those as well, and he's really blossomed this year.

...so much so that it's highly unlikely that he'll be a Steeler next season...

Let's hope Limas will be ready to take his place by then...

What really hurt was the injury on the play.

That cost us a time out and 3pts at the end of the half.

Not sure what he hurt other than his pride. The good thing with is that Tomlin will use those plays to motivate all of the WR's.

the biggest thing we have seen out of sweed is that he blew past 2nfl dbs on deep balls which you cant teach, the problems are metal and can be corrected.

at least we know, he has at least above avg nfl raw talent.

the only thing that worries me is the hand surgery he had a few yrs back, the drops mite not be as orrectable as you would normally think.

...especially a rookie with unbridled youth named Sweed.

I agree that nothing but his pride could have been hurt, but stupider mistakes have been made and compounded with bad behavior afterward by Steelers players before...

It's up to Tomlin to continue to help the players to hone those screw-ups, and I'm confident he will...

...especially with this kid.

That drop had nothing to do with hand surgery - it was double-clutch hitch in his step and the alligator arms that caused this, and that's what really pissed me off. :supissed:

Fortunately, these things are correctable, and with more work on timing between him and Ben (for next year and beyond), this will become a deadly combination!!

seriously... i mean, he was so wide open that he didn't even need to catch it over the shoulder. he could(should) have turned around and catch it in the stomach. he would probably have fallen into the endzone with the ball.

i believe that sweed will come around and his lack of playing time hurt. only 6 receptions all year. you know that when the ball was in the air he was saying "oh my god, oh my god, oh my god"

hopefully arizona saw that drop and won't bother guarding him very well, and arians will be smart enough (ha) to take advantage of it.

I think I even read that from his lips in slow-motion the FIFTEEN TIMES that CBS played it...
