For those who remember the Cowher era..
.. which should be 100%. Take a look at this quote from Coach Mike Tomlin.
Doesn't that about sum up the boner in your pants? For those who remember the Laird Era... you can finally rest easy now, as turtle ball is long gone from the city of Pittsburgh.
Is it Sunday yet?
"I was going to be aggressive," was Tomlin's position on that. "I want our football team to know that I have a great deal of belief in them, and that we are not going to play scared. We are going to play to win."

Apparently Tomlin was referring to his FAILED attempt at a fake punt. Sprare McLovin' the Tomlin/Cowher comparisons. Lest we forget "Laird's" SUCCESSFUL on sides kick in Super Bowl XXX against the Cowboys that dramatically changed the momentum of that game. That outcome aside "Laird" showed plenty of balls in big games...ARE's pass to Hines in Super Bowl XL to Hines comes to mind as well.

Dude, you can find exceptions as you have, but over all Cowher coached scared. How many chokes in AFCC game, at home? How many endless game plans of Power rushing the ball, even tho it was obvious opponent was selling out to shut it down. In 2005, it was Ben's influence that allowed for more aggressive plays on early downs. The proof is in the DVD from that season. If you haven't seen it you need to. Bottom line: Tomlin is FAR more willing to coach without fear of loss than BC ever was.
Re: For those who remember the Cowher era..
Sorry boys McLovin' hasn't seen the full body of work from Tomlin yet to compare his balls to Cowhers. It was one game and McLovin' disagreed with both of Tomlins gambles. Going for it on 4th and 1 from the 1 with an 11 point lead not smart. Field goal would've made it 14 point lead. Fake punt even dumber with the ball and own end of field and a tight game. McLovin' rarely agrees with anything Ed Douchette says but in this case Douchette was right better ways to show your players you believe in them. Tomlin was stupid not brave, but not going to argue the outcome.
Re: For those who remember the Cowher era..
I like tomlins' strategy better than cowher's. Not talking about the 4th and 1, or the fake punt, but overall game plan. Cowher would sit on a lead and get comfortable if we were only up by 3 points.. this used to drive me insane. Tomlin even with the lead was calling pass plays to have ben or leftwich still threaten with long strikes to try to put the game away. If they were up by 2 scores they were still out there trying to score more points. Cowher would have been comfortable with just running 3 times and punting, which i hated.
kudos to tomlin, the guy plays to win and doesn't 'play not to lose' like cowher did
to be honest this was probably the first steelers team i've ever seen go for the throat when they were up in points during a playoff game, instead of being comfortable with sitting on a 1 score lead. I have no problem with that whatsoever.

That McLovin' can agree with...but in this last game against San Diego Tomlin COULDN'T sit on the lead because Chargers kept getting one big play after another in the 4th quarter as the defense played some sort of we won/prevent defense a little too early for McLovin's liking.
Re: For those who remember the Cowher era..
I agree with the original post. Turtle ball is gone. Of course, Cowher had one of the best records in history of protecting leads with that style. It was brutal to watch though.
Tomlin is clearly much more aggressive. I did not agree with either call -- thus, we will need to take the good with the bad I guess. Same with the Washington game during the season and the Dallas game. I must say I was shocked to see Leftwich throwing deep to Sweed late in the game also. Unheard of -- and maybe unnecessary.
But it is clear the tone is going to be go for it. Hopefully, it will work out. We are now due to hit one or two of these gambles.

Totally agree. Tomlins going for it on 4th and goal and sneak on punt were not the point here, but instead, the bigger picture items such as how he play calls all game long. You can't coach not to lose. Cowher usually did. You got to coach to win, ala Belichick. Tomlin gives me far more confidence that he won't coach not to lose. Cowher did so one season, in 2005, when Ben influenced him to do so.

just like in 04 when Cowher opted for the FG instead of the TB when you're down by 14 in the 4th quarter
