Re: New Article: Stillers-Chargers Postgame Analysis and Grades
Yeah! that was on e of the more fun games to watch recently. They RAN the ball with soe effectiveness. I am hoping that since they I formation was so successful the FEW time they ran it this game, that they did not want to overuse it (after having used it so rarely for so long) the I really got them some big yard (8, 10+, 8) on early usage and was then seen very little...although luckily they did not go away from the run.
I agree some of the coverage assignments were bad...Woodley should not have been covering Gates...The D looked god...but not great...especially behind the lineman and Harrison and woodley...i did see farrier make an all-pro kind of tackle at one point.
Not sure what to think of Palamalu's game...hoping they will utilize him a little better vs. the ravens.
Also...i hated to see the late letdown by the D (well, i hated the early one too...but we knew Rivers could not make that throw all day).
I really thought Ben looked at his best...and he will need to keep his head there to win next week. The Offensive Line looked Great...I was trying to check all the numbers...make sure they were the same guys...
Go Steelers!

So it wasn't Woodley's fault that he was beat in coverage and it was Farrior's fault when he was beat in his coverage? I don't think that Farrior is great player, but you need to look at things a little more objectively and take off your anti-Farrior glasses.

Uh, let me explain this to you, rook.
Woodley is a hulking 270-pound DE in LB clothing, extraordinary in pass-rushing and run-stuffing. Farrior is a 250-pound 3-down ILB and has been acclaimed by media, coaches, and fans alike as 1 of the greatest PASS COVERAGE LINEBACKERS in all of pro football.
Much like I would limit ridicule to, say, Jeff Reed for not tackling Sproles on a KO return, I won't ridicule a 270 pound bullrushing LB in his coverage on the best TE in the NFL. I will, however, ridicule The Winged God of LB Coverage, James Farrior, whose coverage skills are SUPPOSED to be his forte.

That is because you have a personal problem with Farrior being resigned and with Foote being ahead of Timmons I agree with the later. You are quick to point out Farriors so called blunders and always make excuses for Woodleys'. Fact is that Woodley got burned by Gates for 2 first downs and he got burned by Sproles as well, does that take away from him? no but Farrior AGAIN leads the team in tackles and he is a bum. Well seeing that Woodley is the run stuffer why has he NEVER led the team in tackles in any game? Farrior does it on a regular basis I think that is pretty good for a guy who according to your write up s not a run stuffer. What you do not see is that Farrior is not the one assigned to cover say a T.E. but because of how the play unfolds the Defender that is assigned falls down or gets stuck and Farrior is the closest defender you see on T.V. so it is his fault. Try actually going to the game and seeing the whole picture. The T V only shows so much. And how do you compare the physical ability of a 25 year old with that of a guy in his 30s...
And damn I almost had the Big One when he gave Parker accolades. I'll Mark that one down on the calender.
I think I will take a notebook to the game so I can watch Woodly and Timmons your heros and mark down every time they get beat or don't make the play. Point being noone is perfect on every play that is why the Defense is coached to play as 1 stay in position.

Thanks for showing us your ignorance for all to see.
EVERY defense in the NFL is DESIGNED for the MLB/ILB to LEAD the defense in tackles. Thus, an OLB will never, ever, lead a team in tackles over the course of a season, unless the ILB spot has been manned by multiple players due to injury. If you're too stupid to realize this, you're an even bigger bonehead than we all thought.
Further, Farrior had MAN COVERAGE on Sproles in the 4Q, and gave up a 62-yard TD. Stick that in your pile of bullshit rationale.
Yes, Woodley was beaten in coverage. As ALREADY noted, he is a hulkking 270-pound PASSRUSHER who has NO BUSINESS IN COVERAGE of the best TE in pro football. NONE. This is as asinine as asking Mitch Berger to be a wedgebuster on KO coverage, or asking Aaron Smith to cover Kellen Winslow Jr. down the field. It's a dumbassed idea that serves no purpose. Woodley is a supreme passrusher and NEEDS to be doing that, period.
Again, though, thanks for the laughs. It's often better to keep yer mouth shut and let others assume your ignorance, rather than to open it and remove all doubt.

Re: New Article: Stillers-Chargers Postgame Analysis and Grades
I'd have to agree with jstallworth.
I'm pretty confident I could randomly pick any game Jack Lambert has ever played and easily come up with 3 or 4 plays where he was out of position and/or missed routine tackles or blew pass coverage assignments. I'm pretty sure that doesn't make him any less of a player.
Obviously, Farrior isn't even on the same continent as Lambert as far as being dominant, but the point is that there isn't a player in the league who makes every single play every game.
I mean, Farrior made a few fantastic tackles either behind, or at the LOS, that never got mentioned (I even commented after one of these plays in the game-day thread, which was seconded by some other posters). Why were these plays conveniently left out of the review when you obviously have no reservations about including such plays in the reviews of other players?

"We"?
I think you overestimate the number of folks in your corner there, Spanky. There's no "we" on your side. Unless you have more than person in that melon of yours. Of course, that might explain some things. Maybe one of those personalities is writing the Woodley lovefests, and the other, clinically depressed side, is writing the Farrior/Lebeau downers.
I don't know, I just write software for a living, I'm not a shrink.

Re: New Article: Stillers-Chargers Postgame Analysis and Grades
Mill, I agree with most of the analysis. I enjoy the read and always look forward to it. I am glad you exposed the idiocy of using Carey Davis in those situations. He was weak and went down easily in critical situations. Why wasnt Moore used instead on the 3rd downs plays? On the goal-line run, I like the strategy of a quick hitter, but NOT TO DAVIS. He bobbled it and never even extended his body. We needed half a yard! Show some grit. What a queer.
And yes Farrior is overrated. I enjoy your mocking him.
I do dissent on the following...
1. I would not be critical of Arians for not getting Spaeth involved because... (A) Miller was used relatively effectively (compared to other games) (B) Through his progressions, Ben makes the final decision were the ball goes.
2. I liked the fake punt call, but not the execution. It was refreshing to see Tomlin take this game by the horns, rather than go with the traditional Cowher strategy of complacency and pussyfooting. The blocking scheme was ineffective however, especially when the Chargers were rushing rather than setting up for a return.
3. Regarding Woodley's pass coverage...other than Timmons, he is the best cover LB. LeBeau could go with a different formation that uses a DB in that situation...but if he is going to have Woodley in, better he cover occassionally, rather than Foote or Farrior.

Re: New Article: Stillers-Chargers Postgame Analysis and Grades
I think Farrior was a great FA signing by the Steelers, but LeBeau's respect for him is what got him this last deal, not his play. He is a step slow too many times, and is getting beat up and playing with lingering injuries. His new contract has definitely slowed down Timmons's progress, because they can't bench the future four-time Captain, in order to put the best ILB in for a round of plays. Timmmons has had some gaffs this year, but it is more expected of someone who hasn't started more than a handful of games.
I would have much rather re-signed Joey Porter and dealt with his mouth, aging body, and a surplus of OLBs than what Kolbert did with Farrior. It was time to walk away from james and let him retire in a Redskin or Cardinal uniform, like most players on the decline do.

Willies back! Great job Oline!!
Thank you TEnn. Way to go leadass White for punking out and coughing the ball up in the red zone, being a RB(mortal sin), this cost u the game
Now that TEnn has softened the ratbirds up, we can deliver the KNOCKOUT blow next Sun.
Balt has played the last 17? weeks. They were missing some tackles vs TEnn and if they didnt lose C. Johnson, Tenn. probably wins.
Yeah, whats the deal with 2 TE if u never pass to the second one?

Willie The Colon
Agreed with everything except FB grade - Carrie Davis brought that down to a C-, other than the occassional nice block - he blows.
Re: New Article: Stillers-Chargers Postgame Analysis and Grades
I think everybody on here needs to quit the bickering and enjoy the latest run by the Steelers for their sixth Lombardi trophy.....after all......we are ALL rooting for the same team! The fake punt and going for the touchdown on 4th and goal instead of the field goal were the only bad things I take away from this game.

Sure about that?
Re: New Article: Stillers-Chargers Postgame Analysis and Grades
Well I think everyone is...........just that some are more critical than others.
Re: New Article: Stillers-Chargers Postgame Analysis and Grades
This is my first post on here...yea for me. Anyway, one more win and I am on my way to Tampa to witness history! Lombardi Trophy number 6. I have one fear that it won't be so easy to run against the Ravens next week and Arians will resort to his run left for minus 1, run left for minus 1 and then decide to throw the ball. Here's to Big Ben having a monster game and sending that thug (Ray Lewis) packing!
