This is so stupid

Postby stillDrink » Fri Jan 09, 2009 8:51 am

I can't believe the official steelers site is bitching about officiating. Yes, the refs effected the line in that game, but this is just bad mojo.

http://news.steelers.com/article/101676/
THE OFFICIATING CREW VS. A SENSE OF FAIRNESS: Even though it went down as the first 11-10 final in NFL history, the first meeting included an impressive amount of offensive production from the Steelers. Twenty-four first downs; a 50 percent conversion rate on third downs. Willie Parker rushed for 115 yards and averaged 4.3 per carry; Ben Roethlisberger passed for 308 yards and completed 75 percent. So why did the Steelers fail to score an offensive touchdown? Thirteen penalties. Seven of those were assessed to the offense, three of those for holding, including one for holding on Sean McHugh that took a touchdown off the board in the fourth quarter. In the same game, the Chargers were penalized twice for 5 total yards. Granted, penalties are penalties and should be called, but when it comes to the discretionary flags – was it pass interference or was it incidental contact, for example – the game should be called evenly. James Harrison was being held at least once on every series that afternoon, and it never was called. Let ‘em play, or call it close, but once that is established, the game needs to be called both ways.

Dude, call it bitching or whatever, but it is what it is. I am NOT one to say anything about officiating, it is simply apart of the game, period. BUT, I was at that game, and GOD DAMN was it a relentless tirade of flags thrown against us. I, for one, was fishy of what was going on, and found it dumbfounding when the official stats were out and the penalties read 13- 115 and 2-5 in favor of SD.

It wasn't nec. the amount, but it as was the time of when these flags occurred. No matter, we still won the damn game!!!!

That was the most shamelessly rigged ref'ing I've ever seen. And, if you had any doubt that the fix was in, the refs put the cherry on top by shaving their OWN points on the last play! The days of blindly respecting officiating are long over. Remember, Donaghy didn't get busted because of some NBA investigation or internal house cleaning, his popped up during a FBI investigation of the mob. I bet the NFL is just too chicken shit to do its on looking.

Forgive my ignorance, but I've been wondering.

I'm not a sports betting person. Occasionally I'll play poker with my friends for $20 buy in or whatever, and I've learned what parlay means simply from common usage, but I don't understand the fuss about this game and the point spread because of my aforementioned ignorance.

The Steelers won, but they didn't cover. Who would that benefit most that would make this a controversial outcome? Also, would the alleged fix have ramifications for the point spread for this weekend's coming game? I know they couldn't possibly know that these two teams would meet again, but they could assume.

This is a serious inquiry and you can write smart ass answers if you want, but I'd honestly like an answer to the question.

Thanks.

And apparently the sun sets in the northeast in January. Labriola must have had a buzz on when he wrote this. He typed the word 'must' instead of 'muster'.

The first time I read it, I thought it said the Stillers' longest PUNT of the season was 35 yards by Santonio.

The Steelers were favored by anywhere between 4.5 and 6, depending on who you bet with and when during the week you bet. The Polamalu TD would have swung the game from those who bet on the Chargers to those who bet on the Steelers. That week, nearly two-thirds of the money bet on that game was put on the Steelers. Something along the lines $100 million was bet on the game. That means Vegas (or bookies in general) stand to make @$64M. Those may be incorrect figures, though. I do know that the majority of the money bet was placed on the Steelers. So Vegas was rooting for the Chargers. Conspiracy theory would leave you believe that Vegas got in the officiating crews ear.

I watched the game again last night and it was MUCH worse the second time around. The Polamalu call wasn't close to being the worst. The Jackson/Ike PI call, missed holding by the Chargers, every grab made by the Steelers flagged. Flags on the Chargers picked up. It doesn't take much of a leap to start screaming "FIX!" Although I think it's more likely this was Goodell telling the Steelers D to shut up with the pansy league comments. I don't think any of this is likely, but it is food for thought.

I like the move by the Steelers, they launch a preemptive strike to say they aren't going to take horrible officiating laying down.

Keeper

Thanks for the clear and concise explanation. That makes much more sense now why people might think that the fix was in. I never put much stock in such talk, but the Donaghy situation really does make you think sometimes when funny stuff like the whole 13-2 penalty situation happens.

Thanks again
