Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
800+ receptions on Ward's career moves him to the top of the Steelers All-Time List.
(Plus he broke 1,000 yards again for the season.)
Congrats to Hines.
Good enough for the HOF?

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
Though he is number 1 in all the stats for the Steelers. There are many WRs that have way better stats but I believe he should be because of the way he plays the game. No WR does as much as well as Hines. His heart is what makes him special.
But do you know the number 1 thing that is going to stop him from getting in at least his first year of eligibility?

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
Let me preface this by saying that I love Hines Ward.
I love him as much as my staunchly heterosexual male brain will allow me to love another man and not make it weird.
I don't know if he's flashy enough, though, to make the Hall of Fame.
I could be wrong, though.
Wishy washy enough for ya?

Well he has 800 receptions for 9,780yards over his career.
Even with all the intangibles, I don't think he is quite there.
He is nearing the top ten all-time in receptions so another couple productive seasons with another deep playoff run should get him in Canton.

Hines will probably get fined for this.

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
I tend to agree with shawnlucas on this matter most of the time, but......but
I think Ward has gotten so much attention for playing the WR position so physical and for being such a complete player with his blocking, that the voters will take that into consideration and want a player like Hines in the Hall. This sort of attention is good, because it's a different attention that a WR doesn't normaly get and this seperates him from all other WR's. Plus, he has good numbers and a Super Bowl ring and MVP which will also help.
That being said, I don't think he is a first rounder. I would bet it takes him a little longer, maybe 10 years, but I hope not.

Hines Ward embodies what an all-around wide receiver SHOULD be but is rarely found. The only thing anyone can really say he lacks is speed... And IIRC, he out-ran DeAngelo Hall with one shoe! His ability and stats are there.
With his personal accomplishments regarding team records coupled with the Super Bowl ring and MVP... I think you're right. He has the credentials to get into Canton. I'm going to go as far as saying he'll go in first ballot.
Good post, Buckeye.

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
The no.1 reason they probably won't let him in 1st year is that he plays for the Steelers.
Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
not a first ballot but he will eventually get in. he might not have the yards and receptions but he's also a super bowl mvp, which counts for a lot

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
Nino, I thought about the Super Bowl MVP thing and that would seem to count for a lot. I think that if the Steelers win another one and he is a big part of that victory, then he's a definite lock.
Buckeye, I agree that he is a complete player, but I don't know if that is valued as much as it should be. Moss, Irvin, et al catch a lot of balls and are great at self promotion, so they're sure first balloters (Coke head Irvin is already in and Moss will be), but a guy like Wes Welker has just as much to do with those teams winning. He gets some media play, but it isn't for being that guy that goes long and catches a lot of touchdowns. He's not on top 10 every night, so I don't know if he would be the kind of guy who gets into the Hall of Fame. I could be wrong, but those are my thoughts.
It's not like they talk about Hines "revolutionizing" the receiving position like I've heard some media types say about Irvin. I don't agree with the assessment because all Irvin did was take advantage of looser push off rules for him to catch more passes.
I'd like to see Hines in the Hall, because I think he is an all around football player, but I don't see him as a media darling. He's a good interview, so they love him for that, but he doesn't run really fast and catch 90 yard TD passes.

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
In many ways, Hines Ward is similar to HOFer Art Monk:
1) Long, productive career.
2) Terrific third down possession receiver.
3) Heart and soul of his team.
4) Great blocker. (Hines even better than Monk, who was terrific)
5) Great cumulative statistics, but not the big home run threat.
6) Impeccable work ethic.
Yet it took Monk at least ten years to get into the Hall. Part of that was due to his being painfully shy and not doing interviews. Sportswriters who were "stiffed" by Art "stiffed" him back and left his name off their ballots. While Hinesy has never been interview-shy, he has developed a reputation among some for being a dirty player. I'm afraid we'll have to wait until the voters in Cincy, Baltimore, Cleveland and a few other cities decide to put their prejudices and gradges aside and put Ward in Canton, where he rightfully belongs.

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
He belongs.
But will he get in?
Down side: not flashy or speedy, doesn't have gaudy numbers, and most importantly, there is a big backlog of WRs waiting to get into Canton. Hall voters struggle with this position a lot.
Plus side: as others have stated, the Super Bowl MVP will help, as will his well-earned reputation for being a tough and complete football player.
Definitely do not think he will get in first ballot. Long term though, I think 86 will join 88 and 82 in Canton.

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
It's the Hall of FAME.
If anything, he is 'FAME-OUS' for being such a physical, well-rounded wide receiver.
Everyone knows who Hines Ward is and what he's capable of doing... He's set a few team records...
He'll be a first ballot assuming the likes of Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss, and all the other superstar receivers out there don't decide to retire before or the same time he does.
That's my guess.

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
William Perry was FAME-OUS for having a refrigerator body and for his TD plunge in SB XX. He'll get into Canton only if he buys a ticket.
Gary Anderson was FAME-OUS for his perfect regular season in 98 and for his run at the all time points list. He's also not getting in.
Brian Bosworth was FAME-OUS for the mohawk and his initial splash in the league....
Many other examples.....
True, it is called the Hall of Fame, but I don't think "fame" is the primary criterion Hall voters use.

Gary Anderson should be in the HOF.

Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
Stallworth never got a SB MVP and he's in, although I am one who is laughed at for saying he should have gotten the SB XIV one. With no more Swann, I have a good case supporting that one, who else did the Rams have to cover deep? They did try, but failed.
Re: Hines Ward = Franchise All Time Reception Leader
You run faster without shoes.
How does noone know that?

One more Super Bowl MVP certainly wouldn't hurt his chances...
