#2 against the run?

Postby isfry » Tue Dec 16, 2008 12:57 pm

Wow. Just like that the Minnesota Vikings have vaulted ahead of us in run D. (71.2 YPG to our 75.8 YPG) The Vikes host Atlanta this weekend, who touts the league's best rush O, which should be interesting. Not like they need it, but maybe this is a little extra incentive for the Curtain to stuff the Titan's rushers and return to the top spot in rush D. I know, I know, nobody remembers who had the league's best run D, only who wins the SB, but still, it would be nice to be #1 across the board again.

ISFRY;

Agreed, it would be nice to get the #1 rush defense back. Especially with the schedule that we have played. If we can get the rating back this weekend it would be impressive with us going against Tennessee.

The stats are the stats but Minnesota does play an easier schedule. The other reason they are so good against the run is they suck against the pass. They give up about 60-70 yds per game more than we do through the air.

Defense against the run can be a somewhat meaningless figure. It can be partially the work of a potent offense.

Like last week, when the Vikes took a 28-0 lead. When you have a 28-zip lead, you eat the clock, but your opponent cannot sustain a running attack. It's gotta be pass, pass, pass. And that means no rushing yards.

Another thing is -- if you have a good line but lousy linebackers and a porous secondary, teams will pass against you.

Steelers : #1 against the pass....#2 against the run....#1 total.

That's incredible, when you consider the Steelers offense hasn't helped that much.

Homer J:

Excellent point about the potent offense. I checked on Yahoo and surprisingly enough the Steelers are 9th in the NFL in time of possession (TOP). Granted this is in large part due to the defense but it does keep the other teams offense off of the field.

Back to the potent offense. If our offense could consistently score 20-24 pts a game we would be hands down #1 against the run. The other team would have the throw the ball and we could pin our ears back and go after the QB. Several QB's in the league might get killed but hey shit happens. However, this would then hurt the passing stats to a point.

Either way this defense is a joy to watch. I grew up in the Burgh and now live a little out of the area but get the Steelers a lot on TV. Watching this group is like going back to the mid 90's or 70's.

Here's to a Super Bowl push:  :celebrate:

Isfry, I'm with you.

I think a good reference is the current Colts.

Who's really gonna forget all the crazy shit theyve done the past like 8 or 9 seasons?

As for their bowl win, yeah i recognize it happened. I certainly don't remember what the score was, where it was played blah blah blah.

That said, yes, across the board would be a tremendous accomplishment that, if repeated, would be very memorable. Once again, ESPECIALLY with this schedule.

it would be nice to get #1 across the board, but we lead in the stats that matter.

#1 overall yards allowed, and #1 POINTS ALLOWED :)

I doubt this is an official stat. However, during the Ravens game it was mentioned that we have the stingiest red zone defense in the league.

Good thing with some of the turn overs we have committed.

Still is points off of the board whenever you limit someone to a FG attempt over a TD.
