Arians Play Schemes Exposed

Postby StillDodger » Sat Dec 13, 2008 6:05 am

The disturbing facts......

The Steelers this season have called run plays out of the shotgun formation only FIVE times.

To give you an idea, the Cowboys ran out of the gun seven times in this past game against the Steelers. The Patriots in the Steelers' previous game ran TEN times out of the gun, including the biggest run from scrimmage against the Steelers this season, Kevin Faulk for 41 yards. And the 122 rush yards against the Steelers, the most we've given up this season.

Our last run play out of the gun was way back in the FIRST Bengals game, in which M. Moore ran for 16 yards. (Moore ran two other times out of the gun- For 6 yards and for 8 yards.)

With Ben getting hammered, running out of the shotgun would have made defenses think twice about pinning their ears back on the rush. I think of both the Eagles and Giants games, where such plays may have given our OL a fighting chance in passing situations.

The problem on offense is we simply don't keep the defenses honest. We don't run out of the gun, and we almost never play fake off short yardage. The fact we get stuffed on short yardage and blitzed heavily on long yardage is no accident. These are fundamental plays a good high school coach would implement. We have an absolute hack for an offensive coordinator.

Arians must go, and must go NOW. :sushootem:

Just a guess but I bet the consensus is that if we ran out of the shotgun, we'd have more negative than positive plays. Our O line isn't very good.

But StillDodger's point is well taken. The offense is predictable and never really has opposing defenses off-balance. The lack of a run game is where it all starts. If defenses aren't concerned about your running game, they can just tee off on Ben, which we've all watched far too often this season and last season.

But this raises the question, although it may not be the most successful formation for us to run out of, do you still have to show run every once in a while just to keep the D honest? I think its something that you still have to show, even if it means taking a few small losses or plays for no gain. There is a time and a place for it IMO

I think the problem might be even more so that they go empty backfield so much out of the gun. Can't hand off (and don't have to worry about the run) when there isn't a back in there.

To be entirely honest, Arians playcalling of the run looks like complete disinterest and done only because he feels he has to run. In other words, I bet if Arians were playing Madden he would never run the ball.

Really clueless how to call a game. Unlike other coordinators who scheme match-ups and look to exploit weakness, Arians just decides what plays he likes and calls them regardless of personnel and situation. In other words, I believe Arians goes into the game with specific calls for a situation, and when that comes up he calls it with complete disregard to whether or not the guys at the point of attack there are getting outplayed.

actually, if Stilldodger's stats are accurate, Moore averaged ten yards per run on the three he mentioned. As for keeping D's honest, I agree with Lake. Go shotgun with 4 WR insted of 5, leave Moore in. Maybe he blocks, maybe it's a handoff, maybe it's a screen...maybe it's something really cool that I don't even know about yet...

Also throw in the fact the moore was brought in as a third down back and was the number 3 running back on the vikings last yr. Parker is playing on 1 leg and really was never a great back to begin with.Coulple that with the offensive line and I think your basically wasting a down everytime you run the ball. The only reason I see to the run the ball is simply to give the defense a blow as I exspect 2 yds max everytime the ball is handed off.

I also recall people complaining that ben lets the clock go down to 1 second on every play. I think thats by design to give the defense a blow since we dont control the clock on the ground anymore. I think thier offensive objective is Ball control through the air with short passes like you see to ward behind the line of scrimmage 2-3 times a game, 4 yard slants ect.... and running the clock to 1 second pre snap. I think they planned on being able to run better going into the season ,but know are slowly adjusting into ball control through the air.

I think tomlins goal was a 27 run/27 pass a game avg instead of the 35 run, 20 pass cower used, but cower drafted the olinemen stricty for run blocking so tomlins scheme wont work till he gets a multi talented line.

your best offensive player was bettis , so you build the offense around him. Now you pay your best offensive player which happens to be a qb 100 million bucks and build around him which is probably thier plan. sticking with the run and building around parker who is not an elite back would not be a smart thing to do.

Something different couldn't hurt, for sure. It's hard to believe that every possibilty hasn't been considered given how ineffective we've been, but they don't seem to be adjusting much.
