Sons first game at Heinz Field
.I'm taking my 7 yr old son to the Cleveland game his first at Heinz Field he's been to Baltimore and Cincinatti We live in Tennessee , long time Steelers fan back to the days of Rocky Blier and LC Greenwood, trying to think of some ways to make it special for him-Any suggestions or activities-he has become a huge Steelers fan. Thinks the sun rises on Big Ben; he almost got me in a fight in Baltimore last year when he heard one of them say something about him. Anyway if you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Also if anyone is doing the tailgate thing I would love to bring him. I of course would chip in any money for food etc... Thank for reading

Hi ironbird. Welcome, and thanks for your post.
I suspect that some of the Pittsburgh locals at this site will probably provide suggestions for you about things to do during your upcoming visit to the 'Burgh with your son.
Have a safe trip, and enjoy the game!

Get to the stadium early and tour the Great Hall. There is lots of Steeler memorabilia. They have lockers of some the more famous players and put some of their mementos in them.

Re: Sons first game at Heinz Field
The sandwiches with french fries on them. I don't know if the sandwiches mentioned here have french fries on them or not. I've only been to the burgh 3 times in my life, or maybe 4, but I was impressed by the french fry sandwiches. Where else in the world do they do that?
Re: Sons first game at Heinz Field
Is there still that sports mural on some building downtown? Mean Joe and Mr. Lambert and a baseball player and a hockey player? That would be one of the sights for him.

Logj -- you're talking about Primanti Bros. Their signature sangwich has fries and slaw inside.

my gosh people -
This guy's coming from Tennesee and all you can think about is a mural and a sandwich (however good it is?) Your forget what a great city you live in. Maybe its easier for me to realize, since we moved away when I was 9 and only get back for family events.
What a 7 year old kid would love, assuming you can get to town for more than just Sunday's game:
1. Ride the Incline
2. Dinosaur hall at the Carnegie Museum - one of the best in the world
3. The zoo is great - is there much to see in wintertime? Help me out here people
4. Fort Pitt museum - if he like soldiers and Indians and stuff
5. Children's museum
6. Do they still do the Christmas window's at Kaufmans? (refuse to call it that new york store name)
7. Take him to the confluence (Point Park - where the rivers meet - Fort Pitt blockhouse and museum there)
But everyone's right, you gotta get there early, or stay late, to see the Hall of Fame in the stadium
Have Fun!

I made my first trip ever to Pittsburgh for the Dallas game and I loved it! I'm from KC and Pittsburgh's downtown is WAAAY better than ours. Lots more nightlife, city seems relatively safe, and great public transportation system. I really didn't have enough time to hit what I wanted to see.
1. National Aviary: a walkthrough experience. They have shows and the like so you can get there at certain times to see demonstrations, etc. Just a block from the Children's Museum.
2. Andy Warhol museum
3. Waterfall house: outside of town but an iconic American work of architecture.
4. Football museum
Definitely go to the original Primanti Brothers restaurant on 18th street. The sandwiches at the stadium SUCKED!
Re: Sons first game at Heinz Field
These are some great suggestions and we have looked into the Dinosaur Museum and Childrens Museum I also saw Pirmantis last week on Man vs Food and definitely planning on going there. I've been told there are various tailgating parties where you can pay a certain fee ie $15 and join in the festivities anyone know anything about these?

Re: Sons first game at Heinz Field
Gotta hit the Western PA History Museum as it has a whole floor dedicated to Sports (not sure if this was what was meant by the football museum or not). Great stuff on the Steelers Glory years and especially on the Steel Curtain as well as Pens, Pirates (they were once a good team) and other stuff of interest. One thing I was amazed at was their list of local PIT boys who became starting QBs in the NFL - pretty long list.
Also, visit the strip district on Sat morning - the day before a game it is something to behold. Lots of good prices on Steelers stuff (both official and not official). The best place to go is the corner that includes Feinberg's - across the street is a small shot within indoor & outdoor displays and one stand that is only outside. Scout them all before deciding where to get your stuff. You could have your Primanti samiches then or if you have them another time during your visit, go to Peppi's and have the Rothlisburger. When we go, my wife likes to walk through Wholley’s market and look at all of their displays, especially the live seafood & fish - it is a true Pittsburgh landmark.
If you want a memento of the visit, go to Hometown Sports in Station Square. Starting Sat afternoon, they sell special Terrible Towels with info about that specific game. I have 2 very special ones, the first was Ben’s reg season rookie season win against the Jets and the 2nd is the SB season snow bowl victory over Da Bearz. Great keepsake of special games.
Have a great time

I would suggest parking/shopping/eating in station square the morning of the game. I've done it every time I make the trip to the burgh. Alot of stuff you want/need centralized right there.
The bonus is you get to ride the ferry across the river and pull up at the open end of the stadium. Truly is a sight to see. A true mecca to behold!
