Cello;
Good article as are all on Stillers.com.
I agree defenses are trying to take away some of Ben's options for rolling to his right and other things, but good offensenses and coordinators need to adapt and Arians does not seems able to do this.
I am no expert but would like to see the Offense do the following on occassion:
1. Put Moore/Russell or Parker/Moore in the back field at the same time
This would give a defense more to think about. Would also be easier to get FWP isolated on a linebacker. Run the receivers deep and the Willie do his magic. Willie could even motion into the slot (aka Reggie Bush).
2. Stop the telegraphed hand offs.
3. Use our RB's on short shuffle pass up the middle.
4. Have quick pitches to the outside. In Parker and Moore we have two fast RB's and the current plays take too long to get them to the edge with their speed.
5. I agree with Cello's comments about the gadget plays. They do keep a defense honest and does not allow them to over pursue. Plus the players loved to practice them.
6. Finally, the offense always plays better both in the no huddle and when it is late in the game when there is a sense or urgency. To me this again comes back to coaching. If the no huddle works and Ben can run it (and he has shown he can with great results) then by all means DO IT. Even if you only run the no huddle for a few plays here and there you can create the defensive mismatches you want.
Oh well, time to get back to work.

I want Russell in the backfield more, like everyoen else.
The issue may be the pass game- is Russell good at blitz pickup, and/or can he catch?
Because if not, unless you do what has been mentioned, and line Russell up with either Moore or Parker in there, you are telegraphing (even more than usual) that it's a run play.
But hell- Arians claimed he was all for a pony backfield...so why not do it?
Miami's brought back the single wing...why can't we bring back the pony backfield...like the Rocky/Franco days?

Re: New Article: Notes from the Cello...
Just a minor point on FWP: most people rightly recognize that his injury has affected his speed. But it's not just that. He also has about zero ability to break tackles right now because he, presumably, has no serious push-off power as a result of the injury. (Not saying he was ever a bruiser when it comes to breaking tackles, of course, but now he breaks practically no tackles.)
I seriously wish they would take the risk and just rest him until the playoffs.

I agree with everything Cello. This is great team that has a strong powerful defense but lacks a strong offense. I do not get it though because we have all that talent and we are a mediocre offense. Hopefully they DO get out of their funk and play some O a lot better.

Nice article, cello !!! I agree with steelman, what happened to the no huddle, its been sucessful in the past, not saying we have to go crazy with it but we need to implement a change during the game and if that can get us going and keep the dee on there heals, then arians, make it happen, much too predictable !!!
Re: New Article: Notes from the Cello...
great article, Cello! No huddle, trick plays, west coast offense. You would think that that required a goddamn PHD in football to come up with the way Arians has resisted. Three step drop and short pass, three step drop and short pass, three step drop and short pass. Next thing you know the LB's are backing up to cover that shit, and...whaddya know? WE CAN RUN THE BALL. The sad fact is, Arians seems to think we still have Faneca and Bettis, and we can run to set up the pass. We need to pass to set up the run with our current personnel package, and Cello's suggestions are exactly how to do it. GO STEELERS!!!

Arian's offense is just too boring and predictable. And what happenned to the screen pass? Pittsburgh always got 15 or 20 yards when they ran the screen. No trick plays, no reverses, no nothing. With no offensive line and Arian's play calling we are lucky to have a strong defense. Pittsburgh really needs to look at free agency and the draft to fix the O-line and not ignore it again. There is 13.5 million tied up in Starks and M. Smith alone! There will be money to get some O-line help and re-sign McFadden. Hopefully they will look for a better offensive coordinator too but I don't see that happening. All I know is the Steelers have a chance to win it all this year and be even better next year and play an easier schedule. GO STEELERS!!!

Colon, Kemo, Starks, and Stapleton can hardly get out of the tunnel without tripping, and you want them out in front of a screen pass?
I hate Arians as much as anyone else, and I do not for one minute believe he puts his players in the best position to succeed, but he's also working with perhaps the greatest collection of stiffs the Steelers have ever put on the line (at least post-Noll- I don't know how bad the pre-Noll Steelers' lines may have been).
They are just so shockingly limited in what they can do as a line.
