Let's assume Arians is sent packing after this season...

Postby bigjoespompano » Sat Nov 22, 2008 2:10 am

Looking at all the coaches around the league and speculating on who probably will be unemployed at season's end, What Offensive minded coach or coordinator would give you a Steeler 'woodie' if we signed him as Arians replacement?

I think that we could purchase a TI-86, teach one of the ball boys to run the random number generator program and the resulting game plan would make more sense than some of the crap that Arians has produced.

I always liked Whipple, but he's working with the Eagles right now and he was let go by Tomlin besides.

I haven't heard any rumors of college coaches who want to make the jump or o-coordinators who are on the outs with their teams, so I don't know.

I know, I know, thanks for nothing.

Boise State coach, probably wants a top job. Watch their game vs. Nevada....how about 58-55...pick~em.

I sort of miss the seeing the chin erections of a frothed Bill Cowher on the sidelines, but that would be a strange hire.

I like Billick.

Don't select a coach from the NCAA, IMO.

Lane Kiffin would be an interesting prospect. You can't judge with the Moron that is Al Davis looking over your shoulder. I think he has some creativity based on his USC days. Billick is interesting. I don't know about Ken Anderson, but if he's capable it would be more seemless.

Find someone who can see, Willie has more yards per attempt when he goes to the right! I wish I knew how to get that word to Coach Tomlin! WAIT, I am going to ask Ed Bouchette to tell him.
I emailed Ed B. I feel better even if he doesn't tell the coach haha!

I'd want a coach with a lot more commitment to the running game than we have right now.

Interestingly enough, the top 2 teams in the NFL in rushing offense both employ coordinators that USED to be the offensive coordinator here (Giants, Kevin Gaypride; Falcons, Mike Mularkey). I'd want a coach that was a former running back or even better, tight end instead of a quarterback/wideout. Whisenhunt and Mularkey -- coordinators that somehow got this team to an AFC championship game -- fall into that category (both obviously unavailable). Arians seems too enamored with the passing game.

I'm telling you, Billick is complete fantasy. Aside from whether he'd even lower himself to an OC job, what would you do in Tomlin's shoes? A young greenhorn coach still finding his way and you'd bring in an arrogant, egotistical SB-winning coach to be your OC? Anyone who says they'd do that in that situation is either an idiot or a hypocrite.

First of all, I think this would be the best thing for our offense to can Arians. I'm tired of the lack of imagination and trying to run most plays like Bettis is still here. With the weapons we have on offense (even with our injuries) there is no excuse why we should not score 25-30 pts a game against everyone.

Now who should replace Arians?

I would stay away from a college coach. To me this is too much risk for a franchise like the Steelers. One option is to promote Anderson but I don't know enough about him to know if he is OC material. More likely chance is to pull someone from an offense that has a style we would like to run. A couple of options:

1. Coach from a team like Philly/SD. They know how to use quick pitches to get RB's on the edge and have a ton of screen passes in their arsenal. Plus in SD they actually use the TE to catch the ball.

2. Hire someone who has experience with one of the better offenses in the NFL. Get someone who has been an assistant under Cam Cameron or Belichek the past few years.

The real quality you look for is someone with an imagination that can base his offense around the personnels strengths and that can make an adjustment during the game.

Keep the good comments coming.
Lets kick the hell out of the Pats this weekend.

Billick would never take an OC job - my gawd what an ego on that guy. Gotta keep in mind Ben luvs Arians hands-off approach (rumored). Is Roth mature enuff to let go??? The question is will someone come in & tweak things or totally revamp? This team needs a tweak - they have the weapons.

Hoppy ==> Thanks for the welcome. The ID was the best I could think of on the fly. I live in Hagerstown but was born and raised in the North Hills. Still get back to the burg quite a bit to visit family.

Weiss could be a little interesting if he is sent packing. He made the offense in NE tick with total no-names at the skill positions and retreads at RB. The Steelers have better people at the skill positions. We don't have Brady but Ben with a healthy shoulder is not far behind.

Another thought. To make Arians a better OC Tomlin needs to force Ben to run the no huddle atleast half of the game.

Happy Thanksgiving to Steeler Nation.

i know arians isn't the best coordinator by any means, but shouldn't we put a little of the blame on the o-line. i mean the guy can't do much without a competent o-line...

what the fuck are you guys smoking? arians is 9-3

and arians might possibly go to 13-3 or 12-4

regardless we will win our division and go DEEP into the playoffs. possibly win the superbowl.

now lets say we get to the AFC championship or the superbowl.....

do you REALLY believe we will fire arians?

no fucking way in hell. zero chance.

im not a huge fan of his early season play calling but the last couple games he has turned it around....

funny thing about that...it coincides with ben playing better ....and that coincides with our o line playing better.......hmmm..... my god if i had a pencil to connect the dots i could figure this shit out.....

NINE AND THREE SPORTS FANS!!!

IF WE BEAT THE CRYBOYS NEXT WEEK i can pretty much guarantee arians goes no where.
