Re: New Article: Loose Slag from The Still Mill
Mill, this was some of your best work in a long time.
The Ernster debacle has been well talked about all over the country. Was there anyone who went into work last Friday and didn't think about quitting their job to start training to kick a football. Me and all the guys I work with were saying we could punt better than that chump. Heck, in middle school I could punt the ball more than 28.4 yards. Seriously, for Colbert not to hold open tryouts or contact other people is utterly ridiculous. If the Stillers lose in the playoffs because of piss poor punting, I will be beside myself. I will be on suicide watch. My friends will have to talk me down from the cliff. I know several hard-working, blue collar guys I grew up with who can punt exponentially better than that, and as far as I know, they're all available. Looks like I have some phone calls to make.
The Hampton analysis is spot on. While he wasn't eating shit this year, his absence wasn't noticed. Nowhere in the ass-kissing Pittsburgh media did anyone mention how bad the defense was hurting because of his injury. He really did disappear while injured. I think it's more evidence Aaron Smith is the key to the defensive line. It seems between Eason, Hoke and Kirschke, they can plug guys in for the other 2 positions.
Russell's emergence has definitely come at a good time. With Willie being injured, he gives another dimension to this offense that Mendenhall, though hyped, wasn't able to provide. Moore has been an amazing pickup, but Russell's mentality and patience is yet another tribute to why real Steelers fans love this team -- hard working guys like him keep at it and end up making major contributions.
Now Farrior, while he did play an excellent game against the Bengals, it's good to remind everyone it's the Bungles. His play needs to continue to be "elite" for this team to have a shot at going a long way because he has been a liability.
About Marvel Smith: He's done. For back spasms to keep him out this long is a joke. The only positive I can pull out of this mess is the fact that Colbert's job in the offseason is much easier.
Well, I'm anxious for the Patriots game. I'm guessing Cassell is either going to pick apart the defense or revert back to high school quarterback form. I can only hope for the latter, as his 2 consecutive 400+ yard games worry me. I'm trusting the team is up for the game and makes a statement. LeBeau better dial up the pressure. That No. 2 playoff spot is theirs if they keep playing hard and consistently.
I hope you all travel safe and have a great Thanksgiving.

Mill,
Nice work, but another recipie for mediocrisy or complacency is a winning record! 8-3 makes a coaching staff "stay the course" or think "why fix it if it isn't broke". We know this of course is ridiculous.

Forget about college grads available out there to punt. The CFL just finished their season and there should be at least 10 decent punters in great playing shape that we could hire right now, couldn't we?? Heck, Mike freaking Vanderjagt led the CFL in punting average this year, and there were two punters who averaged over 40 net yards. They have got to be better than Berger. C'mon Colbert, show us you've got some brain cells left...

I think the title of this article should be "Already Loosened Slag from the Still Mill" -- nothing really new or earth shattering came out of that article. Part of me kinda wants back that 5 minutes I spent reading it Kidding.
On the Berger/Ernster bit, maybe it's time to slightly defend Colbert here. The Jags just lost their punter for the season and signed Steve Weatherford to take his place. Weatherford has been cut by both the Saints and Chiefs this year and sports a 27.4 NET average this season. Berger's average with the Steelers this year has been 38.1. Maybe there really IS a punting shortage around the league.

incredibly poor form to not at least bring in multiple people with berger for a tryout...sure its a short-term replacement til sepulveda returns and its only a punter...but were in the middle of a playoff run!!! how can an nfl gm be so lazy about any position? didnt they scout anyone last winter/spring who could possibly be worth a damn?

Re: New Article: Loose Slag from The Still Mill
Lets see some people beat dead horses forever. But although Farrior has made some mistakes he is still better than a lot of LBs and the Mill all knowing analysis of his performances are biased. Yet he never bitches about anyone on the O-Line nearly as much as he should. They totally suck. There are College O-Lines that are worlds ahead of ours. What about Ben? You all praise him as an elite QB but the sacks he takes are awful and the INTs are pathetic yet you all make excused for him week in week out. Granted the O-Line sucks but a good QB will throw the ball away rather than loose yardage or throw ints. Also he has the worst deep pass in the league, that is right when was the lat time he hit a Receiver in stride???? He has not done that all year. Granted the O-Line has been the cause of a lot of that and the WR's have not helped at times but an ELITE QB makes BETTER DECISIONS than BEN has. Blame the injuries but he would be in better shape if he made some good decisions and avoided some of the hits by throwing the ball away. But Mill thinks he is GOD when as a QB this year expecially he is below average and is NOT in the same league as Manning, Brady, Rivers, hell he is not in the same league as a lot of QBs. Arians is the most pathetic OC in the league and that point is well noted but the fact that Tomlin doesn't do something about Arians is just a clue as to how unprepared he is for a HC Tomlin is an excellent Coordinater but hasn't showed me that he can make the adjustments needed to be competitive as a team
