The Assaholic Pittsburgh Media

Postby BigE » Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:30 am

Today, in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, an article was written about how the Steelers should have at least 5 defensive players represented in the Pro Bowl for this year. The article was written by the John "i'm an asshole" Harris. At no time during this feeble, bullshit article does Mr. Harris once mention the name Lamarr Woodley. His 5 defensive players he has are the obvious Aaron Smith, Troy Pola, James Harrison. His other 2 are absolutely ridiculous. James "overrated" Farrior and Ike "can't catch a cold" Taylor. How can you not mention the sensational and beastly play of one Lamarr Woodley. This guy must be drinking the same koolaid that Kevin Colbert was drinking when he gave Farrior that bullshit extension.

woodley, polamalu, and harrison are locks

ike has been playing lights out this year, he's just a decent set of hands away from being a future hall of famer though. the guy has solid tackling and coverage, but could learn a thing or two from troy on how to catch the dang ball. farrior has had some crazy games but sorta runs hot/cold. aaron smith i love the guy but don't know if he puts up enough stats for the voters to put him in the bowl.

without ike taylor playing as well as he is we would be 4-6 right now. He is shutting down everyone this year. Thats the problem with the best defense in the nfl. you cant pick just five.

But saying IKE is not worthy of top five status this year is truly moronic. based on this years performance he should have about six interceptions on top of everything hes done. he is possibly the best in the entire nfl at his position this year.

best in nfl.

Bill Belicheat called Aaron Smith "Everything you'd ever want in a defensive end" in his last TV show in Super Bowl XL year (he picked the Steelers, saying they would make big plays and the Seahags wouldn't.

Smith does not get the attention he deserves because in a 3-4, DE's don't get the sacks, linebackers do. People overweight defensive statistics. The best DB's have their guys covered, and the ball isn't thrown their way, so they don't get a chance to intercept the ball, yet number of interceptions is viewed as a measure of quality of DB's. It's almost a measure of how well your teammates are covering their guys, and the quarterback makes a bad throw in your direction as a result.

Still Mill is correct, defensive statistics are meaningless. Only points allowed.

I don't think points are the most accurate way to judge a defense -- especially when looking to compare the top 10 defenses in the league.
You have to account for pick 6s and for the times the offense turns the ball over deep inside its own territory -- like Ben against Indy. Can't completely blame a D for giving up points in that situation.
I would judge a D by how many long, sustained TD drives -- more than 60 yards -- it has given up.
By that measure the Stillers D seems to be historically good this year.
