Odds of getting a college sports scholarship - WOW!

Postby thesteelhammer » Mon May 26, 2008 3:36 pm

http://www.berecruited.com/

I don't know if the data from the above website is accurate, but it has the numbers of college scholarship opportunities available for each sport. I ran accross a discussion about this on a H.S. sports message board and thought folks at Stillers.com might find it interesting to compare the number of Scholarships available to college athletes to the number of high school participants in each respective sport. Kinda shows the long odds of a kid getting a sports scholarship, unless of course they are one of the 2,398 High School Girls who are on a rowing team. Also shows that football is king with over 1 million high schoolers playing it.

Interesting data. Yes, more FB slots b/c of squad size. Did not see data for W softball.

If you were to look at these data for the last 20 years or so, you would see huge growth in W Soccer, etc.

The crew phenom is a response to Title IX as schools try to add slots for women on teams with some squad size potential. Less productive to add W Golf, for example, than crew.

Another note: Interesting that Title IX counts athletes on multiple teams, so a female athlete can be counted 3 times if she runs Indoor Track, XC, and Outdoor Track.
