Steelers Sign KR/WR Jacoby Jones; Release KR/RB Dri Archer

Postby Steelers76 » Thu Nov 05, 2015 8:25 pm

The Steelers signed vet Kickoff Return-WR Jacoby Jones and released KR-RB Dri Archer. Jones was waived by SD earlier.

Wow. Talk about good timing with my thread earlier this week stating with The Steelers signing Pead to back-up Williams, there is no use for Archer being on the team anymore. All he was used for was returning kicks, and all he was good for was backing the offense inside their own 20 yard line constantly.

That said, I have no allusions that Jones is the same player who greatly helped The Ravens win their 2nd Super Bowl 3 years ago. If he was, it stands to reason The Chargers wouldn't have waived him. However, I will take an aged J.J. over a never will be like Archer. Another reach-wasted pick by Colbert, but at least they FINALLY realized it. Now if they would do the same for 3-4 more players currently taking up space on the active roster.....

WOW. I agree that an aged, past his prime Jones is way better than Archer will ever be. That, unfortunately, begs the question, "WHY THE FUCK WAS ARCHER EVER SIGNED IN THE FIRST PLACE???"

At least they finally saw the writing on the wall.

it's good they got rid of him I hope New England doesn't get him and turn him in to another Dante Hall. Mike Vrable did well with them. Why didn't the steelers have him run fly patterns from the slot instead of being a running a back? He was supposed to be so fast! Steelers don't know what they are doing.

I heard rumblings down here in poeville Tuesday that the ravens were looking to bring JJ back due to the depleted WR position there with Smith out. BTW, wonder who else was put on the Steve Smith hit list after this injury like he did when the Stillers knocked him out of the game this year?

The Chargers had to release him to make room for players to add to make up for their shitload of injuries. Many of their injured players are out several weeks so they are still on the 53, but needed to make room for linemen and DB's to sign to be able to field a team. It had very little to do with performance. The guys on their special teams are worse than the Stillers; again due to injury/depth issues so I expect him to do a little better with us. Either way, this is a big upgrade over Archer.

If they aren't going to use J.J. as a WR, then I'd have him return punts as well. As explosive an athlete as A.B. is, he never seems to get a lot going in the punt return game. Too many fair catches when there is at least 10 yards of open space in front of him.

Amen. Plus, I always cringe a little with AB back there. We need him now more than ever in the passing game.

Using a star player in a kick return role role is just stupid. An oft-injured position. Anybody who can return kicks well likely has the skills to be a quality receiver or RB. Occasionally there is a pure kick returner who is good enough to justify a specialist slot on the roster, but it's rare. Kick returner is where you put young meat to prove themselves. Like Noll did with a certain kid out of Penn State named Franco. He got in 8 returns and then was removed from the role. I think Noll might have put him back to return a couple punts in ensuing years just to scare the crap out of the other team.

Archer had 14 kick "returns" for 354 yards (25.3 avg.) with a long of 38 yards in his illustrious 2015 half season. How much you wanna bet that JJ both averages more than 25.3 AND has a longer kick return than 38 on his first day?

Good riddance, twiggy.

And Archer was 7th in the entire NFL. If you are happy now, I want what you are smoking.

By the way Jacoby Jones is making 4 milions on a 2 year deal.

Archer was making 400 k a year.

Just sayin..

Well they got rid of archer but when will Jacobs jones turn it on? It seems no matter what the stillers do they are locked in to some mediocre football. I miss the 70s Noll would never have let his team play this sloppy every week. It's hard to watch their games and I miss most of them cause I work Sunday's
