Chip at the edges: This seems so simple, so basic and so obvious – but how many times against

the Colts did we see Scott matched up alone with Dwight Freeney? Having your RBs and TEs chip block

the other guys’ DEs would go a long way toward keeping your QB out of the hospital.

The thought process has to be that putting more receivers in patterns will limit the amount of defenders who can blitz. That didn't make much sense against the Colts, as their defense doesn't require extra rushers to get to the passer.

Going forward the 'chip at the edges' idea seems like it could provide an extra half second against elite edge rushers. If pressure persists eventually the Stillers will have to develop effective screen tactics. Based upon how many guys get free runs at Roethlisberger one would think that opponents could easily be fooled into attacking up the field. Overly aggressive defenders would allow linemen to slip behind them to block down field.

With the way they are playing, that soft schedule doesn't look so soft. I don't think it would be beneficial to win, if this lulls the Steelers into thinking that what they have doesn't need major, major overhaul right now. You would think that Colbert, Tomlin and the Rooneys already know that, but their off season moves do not show that they are in trouble... not signing legitimate tackles and fucking around with the likes of Scott.
No one could think that guy can handle left tackle over a season with what he has shown. Oh and wasting 61 million on Woodely. Insanse.

I will try to be optimistic. I will not comment further about the preposterous nature of starting a guy at LT that was walking the streets earlier in the week, had no training camp anywhere, and no practice or game action all season. I will also refrain from further commenting about the absurdity of having Farrior and Foote manning ILB positions next to each other where TEs and RBs will be allowed to roam free nonstop because they are both too slow to keep up.
On the positive side, it would look like this: our D-Line was getting mauled. Casey and Smith looked old. Hence, not having them, getting Hoke/McClendon involved, and getting Kiesel back who played well last year is actually an UPGRADE. We still have Heyward for depth. This might be our best D-Line in terms of performance all season. The secondary is generally healthy -- Cortez Allen is the only potential loss and we do not need him. The move of Timmons to OLB may provider a bigger push and if we can get better D-Line play, maybe Woodley will return from the dead. At ILB, maybe the guy from Utah will play.
On the O-Line, Essex is the worst offensive tackle in the league so ANYBODY is an upgrade there except for Chirs Scott and some guy named Meredith. Starks knows the offense -- he may tire after fifteen minutes as he has not been playing but let's overlook that. Ben knows how to play hurt. The receivers are great. Foster may be a better RG than Legurski. Kemo has generally sucked and been a gimp most of the year so getting him out of there should help, not hurt. Gilbert has a week more of experience and seems to be decent. The RB carousel is meaningless as Redmon, Dwyer, etc. can fill in. If we run the right offense, either quick thows like in a two minute drill or steady runs, we may find that we have a better team with some of the injuries than we do with many of the "starters" playing. Just sayin'.
All of the above seems possible -- the only points I cannot make with a straight face are those about LT and the ILBs. Maybe crowd noise, terrible towels, and a convenient Matt Hassleback injury will be enough.
Thank goodness the Jags are coming to town next week. Bad team; rookie QB; little upside.

I've criticised big ben on here a number of times. Although there are times he looks like a deer in the head lights, he has no time to size up the situation from the pocket because of that horrible OL.
I'm sorry ben. Your OL sucks. Do you watch brady take a three step drop stand there and look at how open each of his receivers are, then causally hit the open man.(usually welker). If you give an average QB in this league enough time in the pocket they will beat you. It does seem to me however that ben doesn't scramble as much as he used to. Why would a organization with a franchise QB not take steps to protect him?
