SB Champs that miss the playoffs

Postby smheart78 » Fri Oct 29, 2010 2:05 pm

Only 13 SB champions have missed the playoffs the following year. 44 years. That's 30% since 1968. The Steelers will help to add to this list after beating New Orleans on Sunday (If the playoffs were today, they would miss it). I hope they do, because as you can see:
Super Bowl II : Green Bay Packers: Missed playoffs in 1969
Super Bowl IV : Kansas City Chiefs: Missed playoffs in 1971
Super Bowl XIV : Pittsburgh Steelers: Missed playoffs in 1981
Super Bowl XV : Oakland Raiders: Missed playoffs in 1982
Super Bowl XVI : San Francisco 49ers: Missed playoffs in 1983
Super Bowl XXI : New York Giants: Missed playoffs in 1988
Super Bowl XXII : Washington Redskins: Missed playoffs in 1989
Super Bowl XXV : New York Giants: Missed playoffs in 1992
Super Bowl XXXIII : Denver Broncos: Missed playoffs in 2000
Super Bowl XXXVI : New England Patriots: Missed playoffs in 2003
Super Bowl XXXVII : Tampa Bay Bucs: Missed playoffs in 2004
Super Bowl XL : Pittsburgh Steelers: Missed playoffs in 2007
Super Bowl XLIII : Pittsburgh Steelers: Missed playoffs in 2009

The Steelers have unbelievably made this list three times (the most), by adding New Orleans, somehow, this would make our missed seasons go down a little easier.

I think there's a pretty telling trend in that it's happening more and more frequently with each passing year.

The league is constantly pushing parody. The Super Bowl champs get the shorter offseason, plus the hardest schedule the following year, and the margin of talent between the first place team and the 15th place team is almost negligible anymore.

Honestly, the NFL looks at a list like that and smiles. They don't want dynasties.
