An idea to let Goodell and Harrison know how we feel....
I can't pull this off but would be willing to donate $50 bucks to a fan-fund set up to pay off Stiller fines. We cannot have Harrison retire. I don't blame him though. Now they have to start second-guessing the hits they make while they make them. It's football or its not. Make up your mind. Maybe the lookout has already begun. Any thoughts or ideas, you know Hines or Troy will be next.

I wouldn't give any money unless I knew it was going to Harrison or to say, the players union health benefits....something official. Maybe ask Harrison to start his own fund/website.

In terms of a real fund, I concur that I'd send something to a sanctioned NFL Players Assn. fund, but if you want to make a form of protest for only a dollar one person is encouraging fans to send $1 directly to the NFL's offices in NYC. http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Pay-James-Harrisons-Bogus-Fine/134796989903782
I would like EVERY person who likes this page to : Send $1 with a note that says,
"For James Harrison's fine. Steeler Nation"
to Roger Goodell, c/o National Football League, 280 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017.

I wouldn't give money to anyone who, being a MULTImillionaire, is obviously set for life (which Harrison is unless he's a profligate dumb ass). I doubt Harrison is contemplating retirement because of the fine itself. I rather assume it's what the fine stands for—and paying it for him won't get rid of the reason the fine has been imposed. It might make him smile and get warm and fuzzy inside about Steeler Nation though. Goodell is handling this horribly. He should have acknowledged WHY players play the way they do rather than rushing to scapegoat players because some fans might turn off the tv in protest. But fans and players may be overreacting too. We need to step back and really think through this matter. I'm quite sure there is a middle ground between pussy ball and risk of paralyzation/death that will allow the game to remain fun (by which we apparently mean violent and dangerous). The game IS violent. It is what it is. But that doesn't mean all aspects of it are ok just because it's always been that way (everyone can recognize that THAT is a horrible argument). I don't think letting human beings turn into vegetables when they turn 55 is acceptable even if they choose it. It just is not what is best for them (nor do I hink the game attains nobility enough that it justifies it: these guys aren't fighting wars to protect us, they're fighting wars to entertain us and entertainment is not super noble). That being said, I don't want to see football turn into rugby either. What to do?
You asked with your eyes Trent, you asked with your eyes.

I'm starting to cool off on this a little bit, realizing that, ultimately, I'd rather not see a player injured vs seeing a big nasty hit.
How about this, since many of the biggest injuries/hard hitting plays happen during the crossing routes into a zone or mixed coverage, the QB should be fined for making the decision to throw the ball in the first place. Penalize the QB for putting his receiver into the position (the QB sees the positions and still decides to throw). All 3 hits came from ill-advised passes from 2 rookie QB's and from 1 dumb ass 3rd year QB. <---I'll gladly accept criticism of this weak argument.

While I see no way to penalize bad QBs, the crux of your argument is sound, in that, it is the QB's fault. Steve Young on ESPN went on a tirade with the same message. Basically, there are now 32 NFL teams, but there are not 32 competent QBs out there running offenses. The QB needs to be able to recognize zone vs. man coverage, and then, know where he can and cannot throw the ball. Likewise, the receiver needs to recognize zone coverage, too, and sit down in the void. But, overall, it is the QB's responsibility NOT to get his receivers killed.

You fellas are killing me.
If they want to play chess, then get the set and board and go play.
Football is a man's game. Played by men. It is a violent sport. Hard, bone jarring hits happen.
Injuries, unfortunate as they are, ARE part of this game.
End of story.
Each year, I get less and less interested for exactly this type of stuff.
