Steeler 'All Bust' team
Looks like Limeyass Peed is outta there. Thank God. And that brings up a thought.
According to your life time, Set the starters for Sunday's big game and fill each position with the greatest Steeler bust for that position. Peed HAS to be one of the Recivers. Hard to remember a bigger flop at that position. You may also fill the coaching positions if you see fit...

Through no fault of his own, Gabe Rivera. I can remember being a kid in Pittsburgh REALLY hoping they'd take Marino that year, too. What might have been...

Re: Steeler 'All Bust' team
I am glad to see someone remembered Scott Shields for this list. Slowest hip turn in football.
The back story of Scott Shields should provide us with the caution needed while checking out all of these draft prospects and slobbering over someone because of their espn or cbs.sportline scouting report. I can remember reading about Scott Shields - one website made mention how he was a ferocious hitter. Two clicks of the mouse later I was at another site that wrote he shyed away from the big hit. The writers putting this crap out don't really know anything about these players other than what they see in a three play highlight film. Although I should give credit to the second writer just mentioned since he seemed to get it right.

You guys can bust up Shields, Peed, Jax, etc but those guys actually made it thru a camp or two.
How about infamous can't-miss, white WR Danny Farmer or Outland Trophy winner Kris Farris? Those guys never even made the team for one season!! I played a round of golf in a Stiller outing in '99 & Farris was in my foursome. That guy had more friggin' baby fat on him than Hampton!!
Oh yeah - ya gotta add Ricardo Clueless, Fred Gibson, Staat/C.Conrad both in '98, Steve Conley (#3 in '96 draft - another Alonzo Jax/LB hybrid who couldn't adjust).

Although it is hard to be putting third round draft picks in the all bust category. #3 and #4 picks that don't make it in the NFL would fill a list a mile long. It is more special when a #3 actually makes it big.

Who was it that was part of the dynasty years (that's now in the 'Hall') and was drafted around four? Jack Ham?

Jack Ham was a 2nd round pick in '71. I believe Stallworth in round 4 and Webster in round 5 in '74 is who you may be referring to.
I also don't think Worley was a total bust. Had some decent years and drugs did him in. Should have been better since he was a top 10 pick. Walter Abercrombie is more deserving of the bust label.

Unfortunatley, it was the drugs that made Worley a total bust. I remember him coming back in his last season and having a great preseason - but then he disapearred. I thought this was after the drug problem but maybe it was the drugs that ended that preseason - I can't remember. Does anybody remember the history?
You hit it great with Walter Abercrombie - Greg Hawthorne could be added to that. But I was so excited about Abercrombie, after all his name was Walter and he wore #34 so a young kid he was already my hero. But I think I only remember him having a small handfull of 100yd games and waiting 4 years before he even became a feature back. and we all know that didn't amount to much.

A full page of posts and no mention of Mark Malone? What the hell is going on here?
I know he started for us for a number of years, but that's not necessarily a good thing.

Re: Steeler 'All Bust' team
Stoudt, meh, I wouldn't put too much pressure on a 5th round draft pick from Youngstown State. But Terry Hanratty was a Heisman Trophy runner up. Mark Malone is probably a good QB candidate for this list as well. Had some good times, wasn't there a championship game loss in there. He also had what used to be a steelers longest td reception.
Re: Steeler 'All Bust' team
Busts are fun! At least they're fun 10 years after the fact when the salary cap no longer carries their dead weight.
QB - Mark Malone, 1st rd, 1980
Career QB rating was somewhere below the Kordell line, and his presence as the "QB of the future" probably contributed to not taking Marino in '83.
HB - Tim Worley, 1st rd, 1989
The fumbles, the drugs, the...lack of playing well. I hear he's running a motivational speaking company now. Hopefully his message isn't "Lead by example."
FB - Jon Witman, 3rd rd, 1996
3rd round is too high for a fullback, unless we're talking someone of the Larry Centers/Mike Alstott caliber. Plus we already had Bettis' good friend Tim Lester, who had virtually the same skill set.
TE - Mark Bruener, 1st Rd, 1995
I liked Mark Bruener the blocking TE. I didn't like Mark Bruener the 1st round pick. I would have preferred they draft him in the 3rd round, and take Derrick Brooks, who the Bucs picked up ONE PICK after Bruener.
WR - Troy Edwards, 1st Rd, 1999
WR - Limas Sweed, 2nd Rd, 2008
WR is a logjam of busts. Dishonorable mentions include Will Blackwell, Charles Johnson, Danny Farmer, Willie Reid and Fred Gibson. But Princess Tiny Hands and Sweed get the nod. Edwards didn't last his rookie contract and it looks like Sweed just got buried on the depth chart by TWO former college QBs.
C - Chukky Okobi, 5th rd, 2001
Sure, he was only a 5th round pick, but everyone was in LOVE with his physique, and insisted he was the heir apparent to Hartings. Then Sean Mahan beat him out. In training camp.
G - John Rienstra, 1st rd, 1986
G - Kendall Simmons, 1st rd, 2002
Both these first round guards were dealt a shitty hand by injuries. Simmons showed a bit of promise before getting the 'betus and fading, and ulcers, panic attacks and other injuries derailed Reinstra's career.
T - Tom Ricketts, 1st rd, 1989
T - Kris Farris, 3rd rd, 1999
Ricketts and Farrs lasted a combined 3 seasons on the Steelers roster. Somehow Farris won the Outland trophy and got cut all in the same year. Fun fact: Tom Ricketts II just signed on to play tackle at Penn State! Maybe in another 4 years the Steelers can continue the Ricketts legacy.
DE - Jeremy Staat, 2nd rd, 1998
DE - Darryl Sims, 1st rd, 1985
Staat, another award winner in college, actually started enough games in 1999 to show how bad he was. Joe Greene couldn't even convince Sims to put down the hamburger and get in shape for camp, and he had a similar career arc.
DT - Gabriel Rivera, 1st rd, 1983
Sometimes busts are just a tragedy, like Rivera. He didn't even make it through his rookie season before being paralyzed in a car accident. Whats worse is that he was the Steeler's 1st selection in one of the deepest drafts in history. Pittsburgh essentially got nothing, AND did not take Dan Marino.
OLB - Alonzo Jackson, 2nd rd, 2003
OLB - Huey Richardson, 1st rd, 1991
Jackson was too slow and absolutely no good rushing the passer with his hand off the ground. Richardson was the "Oh SHIT" pick Noll made in a panic after their three 1st rd potentials, Alvin Harper, Mike Pritchard and Leonard Russell, were scooped up from underneath them as the clock was ticking down. The next year when Cowher took over, he traded him for a 7th rd pick.
MLB - Steven Conley, 3rd rd, 1996
MLB - Bruce Davis, 3rd rd, 2008
Steve Conley did, well, nothing. I don't remember him much at all, even enough to remember if he played in the middle, but successful franchises get more than that from 3rd round picks. Its better than busting 1st or 2nd round picks, but you want to get contributor value there. Same goes for Davis. He's already off the roster.
CB - Ricardo Colclough, 2nd rd, 2004
CB - Deon Figures, 1st rd, 1993
Colclough was a small school prospect the Steelers thought they could coach up. He has more muffed punts than career interceptions, so I think its obvious they weren't able to coach him up. Figures shant be forgiven for nearly single-handedly sending the Chargers to the Superbowl in '94.
S - Scott Shields - 2nd rd, 1999
S - Anthony Smith - 3rd rd, 2006
Shields was another small school prospect that just ended up looking lost in the bigs. Smith showed some potential, but couldn't keep his mouth shut and focus on not sucking. He is famous for guaranteeing victories, then all but assuring defeat by being burned deep. He was not even tendered when he became a RFA.
P - Daniel Sepulveda - 4th rd, 2007
I'm all about investing in special teams, even punters and gunners. But the 4th round is too high for a punter who isn't a sure thing. Spatula is good, but is not Ray Guy, no matter what the award on his mantle says.
K - Cole Ford, 7th rd, 1995
The Steelers didn't keep him, but he deserves honorable mention here for his off the field antics. And by antics I mean attempting to murder Siegfried and Roy by firing a gun at their house from the street. Apparently he believed that the Vegas entertainers were having sex with the tigers, and needed to warn the world about it. Unsurprisingly, Ford spent 3 years kicking for the Raiders.

Re: Steeler 'All Bust' team
How about Aaron Jones (1st round pick in 1988). His goal was to sack John Elway and get 16 sacks his rookie season. He only came up about 13 short during his HOF career.
John Rienstra in 1986. Yeah-it was the ulcers.
Chuck Lanza in 1988. Was going to be the next great Steelers center once Mike Webster retired.
Daryl Simms-Oh Canada.
Bob Kohrs. The beer itself knocked more people out.
Wayne Capers. Made a better cooking spice.
Huey Richardson (liked his cartoons better-baby Huey), Charles Lockett, Delton Hall (had 2 big games), Jermain Stevens (the forgotten member of the Jackson 5), Chad Scott (immitated a DB).......

Re: Steeler 'All Bust' team
Nice grouping AJ97. Forgot about some of those players. I would have guessed wudu's list would have covered some of those #1 picks based on length alone. The Pittsburgh Media really does its best to annoint these players. I still hold that a #3 pick and later should be a prize with a success rather than a bust with dissapointment but Lanza was given a lot of extra merit at his time.
You also reminded me how forgiving, and naiive, I was when younger - I used to love Bob Kohrs - but looking back I can't understand why.
Didn't Simms have some strange story attached to his career with the Steelers? A Terry Long type of story (aside from the suicide).
