Peyton is footbal royalty?

Postby NJSteel27 » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:57 am

Just before the Colts game this past weekend, the announcers were busy sticking their tongues in Peyton Manning's bunghole, as they usually do.
One comment, however, really got me thinking.

I'm not sure who made it, but the announcer stated that Peyton Manning's pedigree comes from football royalty.

So, assuming he meant that Peyton was tutored by his dad, Archie, I wondered how THAT qualified him to be classified amongst football royalty?

Wasn't Archie Manning on a loser Saints team that did NOTHING throughout his career and didnt even make the playoffs?

pretext: i don't give a shit about archie manning, but here's some interesting stuff i found.

wiki wrote:Archie Manning attended the University of Mississippi and was the starting quarterback at Ole Miss for three years. In the first national prime time broadcast of a college football game (1969), Manning threw for 436 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 104 yards, in a 33-32 loss to Alabama. That 540-yard performance is still tied for the SEC record for most total yards in a game.

fairly impressive

i think it's just the unfortunate case of being on terrible teams for his career. he had decent stats but...

His record as a starter was 35–101–3 (26.3%), the worst in NFL history among QB's with at least 100 starts.

but he did make the pro bowl twice and fathered two superbowl-winning quarterbacks.

networks just play that shit up all over the place for something to talk about. also, i think it's just that there aren't very many famous father-son duos in football, especially at quarterback.

does favre have any sons? they should be in college at least by now... maybe he can hang on long enough to play against one of them in the nfl.

I'm old enough to remember Archie Manning's pro career. He was very good. Back then a good QB on an awful team couldn't do much, the pro game centered around rushing and completing 50% of your passes was considered an accomplishment. Can you imagine a QB from a 2-14 team making the pro bowl? Well, that's the equivalent of what Archie did.

I've grown to respect Peyton. I didn't like him initially, seemed he threw his linemen under the bus when he had a bad game, etc. He's matured a lot and has become a consumate pro and wins games due to his skills and leadership. Plus, he's funny. I love his commercials.

it pains me to admit this, but he does make me chuckle once in a while.

throwing footballs at kids' heads on snl was a treat.

i guess peyton winning another superbowl wouldn't be the end of the world. i didn't want him to win the first one because i enjoyed all the talk about him being the next marino, etc.
