Looking ahead to FA
2010 will be an uncapped year. How will the Steelers respond? Let's take a look at which players are going to be UFA's:
1) RB - Willie Parker. Let him go.
2) WR - Hines Ward. Has performed well this year, but how many years does he have left? At what price?
3) DT - Casey Hampton. Let him go.
4) DE - Brett Keisel. How much does he have left in the tank?
5) LB - James Harrison. I can't imagine him playing in any other uniform.
6) CB - Deshea Townsend. Very old. Let him go.
7) SS - Tyrone Carter. Also pretty old. Let him go.
8) FS - Ryan Clark. We need a cover FS, which Ryan Clark is not. Let him go.
9) K - Jeff Reed. Shouldn't cost too much to retain him.
Potential free agent pick-ups
I'd look at NT Ryan Pickett, Green Bay - excellent run stuffer, couple of years younger than Casey and a better performer. I know the Steelers don't look at free agency for big pickups often but this is an uncapped year coming up and NT is extremely important.
I'd also look at a corner, like Richard Marshall.
1) RB - Willie Parker. Let him go.
2) WR - Hines Ward. Has performed well this year, but how many years does he have left? At what price?
3) DT - Casey Hampton. Let him go.

5) LB - James Harrison. I can't imagine him playing in any other uniform.

Re: Looking ahead to FA
but to answer the question here goes
1) RB - Willie Parker. Let him go.
I AGREE. we have Mewelde and Rashard, pick up another backup somewhere cheep
2) WR - Hines Ward. Has performed well this year, but how many years does he have left? At what price?
Disagree with letting hines go
hes got TOP WR stats this year otherwise id say he needs a paycut. request paycut in 2011 if he drops next year
3) DT - Casey Hampton. Let him go.
you are fired. I DISAGREE
You are insane crazy and more....caseys backup is as old as casey...so you might as well drop his backup also. we have ZERO players to replace casey. draft one? that would have to be a 1st rd pick and he better be the best in the world. HAMPTON is still the best NT in the entire nfl. there may be one other as good as him but the odds of finding a good replacement ....not good. let casey go? he is the lynchpin of our D LINE. dumbest idea ever.
4) DE - Brett Keisel. How much does he have left in the tank?
keep the diesel... DISAGREE to let go. Why? Aaron Smith may retire next year...it COULD happen.
he plays well...dont know what to say here....who replaces him?
5) LB - James Harrison. I can't imagine him playing in any other uniform.
AGREE TO KEEP HIM...big fat duh there.
harrison has played for many teams including ravens....but to your point he has resigned and isnt going so doesnt matter
6) CB - Deshea Townsend. Very old. Let him go.
AGREE
even deshea likely knows this is his last year here. especially now he may be benched this week vs browns
7) SS - Tyrone Carter. Also pretty old. Let him go.
agree sortof
ty needs to take a big pay cut and stay a backup. otherwise cut him. hes gonna be 34
8) FS - Ryan Clark. We need a cover FS, which Ryan Clark is not. Let him go.
WRONG
ryan clark is the perfect complement to troy polamalu. they know each other well enough that troy gets to freelance. troy and chris hope had that until hope went to titans. if we cut clark and draft a rookie to replace him...we would have to as you just cut tyrone carter the backup btw... then you have the problem of troy having to cover the rookie mistakes ...thus troy is nullified. he cant run stop....he cant freelance....he is hogtied... you NEED ryan clark if you want troy on the team. you dont know much about the pittsburgh steeler team dynamics. It is a team...interlaced parts ...they are not individuals. its not plug and play. just like an o line takes years to mesh so would troy and another safety. and troy would lose probably his last two GREAT years in playing nanny to a rook.9) K - Jeff Reed. Shouldn't cost too much to retain him.

Ward and Harrison are not free agents in 2010. Remember Harrison signed a mega-deal after last season. If they were free agents though, they would both be no-brainers.
Re: Looking ahead to FA
Hines and James just signed an extension this year: their not going anywhere. Hines will retire a Steelers

Re: Looking ahead to FA
ah, my bad. I forgot about that.
But yes, it will be an uncapped year. There's no way they reach an agreement.
Casey Hampton is extremely overrated.

Re: Looking ahead to FA
Where is Taunto in all of this? No way is he a 3-down linebacker anymore. I love Sean Lee at PSU. I think this draft goes to "D" as OL seems to be jelling (finally?). I know his knee has been cut, but not as bad as McGhehee's injury surely.
We also need a shut-down corner. I am just not sold on Ike anymore. Plays with his back to the ball way, way, too much. Of course, having boards for hands will force you to cover that way. That said, Gay is still the target and I am not sure he is up to the task. How many times do you have to get burned with a 10-12 cushion before you realize, "Gee, maybe I should get a little closer on 3rd & 5, instead of being back here in the cheap seats."
If they bonus Reed $5K per tackle, I'd say keep him. Otherwise, there are good kickers coming out this year. Get one of them. Reed is becoming a nuisance. You "could" put 2 losses on him this year.

Re: Looking ahead to FA
Yeah Hines and Harrison are not in this discussion. Reed will have to accept a very modest offer. I wonder about Sean Lee. hmmmmm got to admit that would be exciting
I do agree that Ryan Clark is yang to Troy's ying. Troy knows when to defend the ball and Ryan knows when to seperate the receiver from the ball. But when Troy is out Ryan is exposed as only being a hitter and giving up many big plays
Farrior has had it. into the sunset with James and thanks for the memories
CB is not going to be ready, so maybe ILB is the first pick after all
