My Long-Shot Hopes for Bruce Almighty in 2009
As I was going to bed last night, a few thoughts hit me... and now I am thinking there might be a long-shot chance that Bruce Arians won't completely suck this year.
The first factor is Coach Tomlin. This is his third year and shouldn't be afraid to tell it like it is to his fellow coaches. (Unlike when a new coach joins a team and doesn't want to ruffle any feathers until he gets settled in.) Tomlin HAS to notice how much smoother the offense rolls with Ben calling the plays.
It is my hope that Tomlin is no longer allowing Arians to run the show on his own. (Or at least not without any helpful suggestions.) Hopefully they are having meetings with Ben about offensive strategy and how to counter-act last years GLARING problems. We've been seeing them run more screens in camp and pre-season right? Perhaps Ben spoke up and said "Hey, I can't take 40 more sacks this year."
Hopefully, with last year's success, and them all a little more comfortable working together, Tomlin or Ben won't be afraid to say, during the course of the game, "How about we try this?"
Maybe it's completely stupid, but for some reason I am actually optimistic about things turning around in this area. And who knows, if we open up the playbook a little and keep the defense guessing... maybe our offensive line will actually be able to look like they belong at the professional level.
And maybe we'll be able to run the ball better!

As I was going to bed last night
SCM, are you SURE you weren't already asleep and dreaming?
Arians playbook makes a Peanut comic strip read like a novel. 2 runs -1 to the left, 1 to the right,... (or is it vice-versa? ... I can't remember) and 3 or 4 pass plays depending on how much dirt is on the ground when he draws 'em up.
I am sorry Boys, but this guy just wears me out when I see the potential for the talent we have on "O".
I sure hope MT gets more than a little irritated when he sees 3 & outs and when "the box is stuffed and we STILL tell 'em we're a comin' at ya so ya'll jus' git ready fer it" and we get stuffed in the backfield on 3rd &3 because the line is overwhelmed and we can't audible out due to personnel or whatever.
Hines and Miller - best tandem in the league for 3rd & short and we convert at what, 30-35%? Pathetic.
Give Bennie the ball and let him run the 2-minute from kickoff. I don't have much hair left to pull out.

Arians' playbook looks like a credit card receipt.
Whatever, his offense is not bigger than either a credit card receipt or a comic strip. Yuns decide.

Gosh, I'd love to be on THAT thought train but I just don't see it happening unless, ...UNLESS, Ben just takes over in mid-qtr with a 2-minute hurry-up and scores repeatedly ( 2 or 3 straight times). Maybe then, MT will see how we score and why - No Arians Interference.
How can it be so obvious to novices like myself and "creativity" not be addressed in film sessions? We know it's NOT addressed because it happens too many times. Run games sucks, no PAP, screens aren't effective and it seems we just give it up on 3rd down conversions.
Do you think, maybe our Defense is just too good? Too easy to rely on those guys to bail us out?
I beats me all to pieces but I would LOVE to see MT go to the Blood Clot on TV and we could read his lips when he would say,
"Why in the &^%$# SAM HILL did we run THAT &*^%$ play AGAIN? IT DIDN'T WORK THE FIRST 6 TIMES YOU'VE TRIED IT THIS QUARTER. IT SURE AS &^%* AIN'T GONNA NOW! Go back to the dirt and draw something else"
Or say something like that.

My hope for Arians this year....
We Donald Trump his ass. "YOU'RE FIRED."
Before we get to midseason, preferably.

I still wonder if the Steelers had lost in the 1st round last year if Arians would have been canned. It would have been the possible silver lining in the cloud over a playoff loss.
Before the rermainder of this post, let me say that I don't like his play calling in general.
However, its really hard to do a whole bunch with this rag tag o-line. They can't run the ball so rip the play action pages out of the book. Spaeth can't do sh*t to help in their 2 TE sets which compounds their running issues in short yardage. There's going to be pressure so it's much easier to start #7 off in the shotgun so he has a little bit of extra time to survey the defense. Besdes that, get the ball out of the QB's hand quicker. I hope they've really worked on their screen game because it's been atrocious for too long.
