First 4 releases
Just went out on the wire: Capizzi, Vincent, Shipley, and Redman.
Don't know why these 4 names were released separately - maybe to get them cleared early for the practice squad.

Re: First 4 releases
Then the oddest thing happened. These 8 names were released and Tomlin started his press conference saying they were not going to list any names so no NFL teams are given an advantage at these players or the Steelers roster since they still had 24hrs.
Maybe the names were released by a mistake from the steelers press room.

I really think it's a BIG mistake to cut Redman. I hope they didn't cut him. I'm assuming they must be looking at Frank the Tank as only a fullback right?

Re: First 4 releases
I guess Tank is showing more in practice than Redman. It seemed to me like Redman won the short yardage job. Also, they never seem to use a FB with any regularity any more so why not keep the better offensive threat?

Re: First 4 releases
i didn't get to watch much of the pre-season, but it seemed everyone said much better things about redman than summers...
was this the case?

Re: First 4 releases
frank got hurt, which limited his opportunities in the preseason. i guess the coaches see him as the next carey davis. I think he showed more ability being a versatile back that can block, run, catch, and play special teams. I really hope redman sticks on the PS and can come in and contribute at some point if anyone gets hurt. Logan making the team was really the writing on the wall for redman.

that sucks...
at least we can consider ourselves lucky that we have enough talent to worry about inadvertently cutting good players.
Re: First 4 releases
Look at it this way.
Logan will touch the ball a few times a game...probably the same # of carries redman would get (if he was even active on gameday) Logan has the ability to score from anywhere...redman probably would just be short yardage and maybe redzone. So it makes sense to keep logan active vs. redman just because he can put up points or give us good field position with every touch. Logan would never make it past waivers after his preseason, redman still has a shot to stick to the PS and get an opportunity later in the season if there was an injury. Overall I say smart move by tomlin... and like you said, we are very fortunate to have so much talented depth each year that we can afford to cut guys like bruce davis, carey davis, madison, etc.. Guys we drafted first day are being outclassed by some of the later picks and UFA's. We certainly have a knack for finding quality "scrubs"

Re: First 4 releases
The reason they kept Summers over Redman is pretty simple. Summers showed the ability to play fullback and be a lead blocker. This enables him to be the 4th back to dress on Sundays. He'll probably also take over Carey Davis's Special Teams duties as well. Essentially he replaces the role of Carey Davis and HOPEFULLY adds a little more than Davis when he gets a touch or two.
If Redman showed he could play fullback and ST he could have had this job.

I still fill Redman could do one thing - run for two yards. A 4th back needs to be able to excel on special teams and maybe Redman couldn't fill that role, particularly in the face of Stefan Logan.

Re: First 4 releases
With Parker, Mendy, and Moore as locks it was going to be a battle between Summers and Redman to make the roster. I still think Redman would be a huge asset at the goaline. Summers hasn't shown anything in goaline situations in practice to this point, whereas Redman was a stud. It's really to bad for Redman, he led the team in rushing and had 3 td's this preaseason. He also dominated the goaline drills in practice. What more do you got to do to earn a job on this team?!?!?!? When Parker is gone next season I think this move will come back to bite us in the ass.

Re: First 4 releases
I have a bad feeling that another team will sign him off our practice squad mid-season. The word is already out on this guy around the league. It will only take a few backs going down for him to get snatched up.

Re: First 4 releases
is there any way to protect him on our PS? or if he gets an offer he could be gone right then?
