and the Steelers 2nd day futility continues
As a Wisconsin fan, Urbik is absolutely AWFUL, he will never see the field, even with our pathetic guards, Duke Robinson was the correct pick.

18 catches in his first 7 games last year on a passing team. another AWFUL pick.
Re: and the Steelers 2nd day futility continues
Kraig Urbik started Freshman year at RT then moved to RG. I don't know anything about him, says he is a pure road grader with limited upside. We will see if Larry Porn can do anything with him. Mike Wallace is a pure return man, lacks receiving skills. Seems like a reach in the 3rd rd. They must have liked his speed and considered him teachable. Still, i don't think anyone would have taken him. He was a projected LATE pick. I would be happier with Duke and WR Mike Thomas, but we will see how they pan out.

In the last two years we've only gotten 1 potential starter out of the draft (Mendenhall) that is not building for the future.

What does this mean? We drafted late in the 1st and 2nd round the last 2 years. We do not need a player to step in right away. That is the luxury of having a well stocked team. Sure, it would be nice to have a new starter on the line or a Rod Woodson type prospect at corner, but we weren't in that position. We took the BPA according to our chart at the position. So Sweed isn't a potential starter? Ziggy isn't a potential starter? Timmons is a starter, Woodley is a starter. We only had 3 picks in the top 2 round the past 2 years and they were all solid picks. Quit your complaining.

Key word...YOU see. Let us wait another year before jumping ship. Polamalu didn't play first year. People hated the pick. Timmons didn't play the first or much of the second year. People hated the pick. I am not saying Mendenhall, Ziggy, and Sweed will be breakout players, but lets wait another year or two before we condemn everything.
Grading draft picks the same day they were drafted with the conviction you seem to have is a poor idea. You have no idea how they will pan out. They were value selections where they were taken.

timmons and woodley didn't come out of the last 2 drafts, what are you talking about? "ziggy" hood was a 5-6 round prospect at the end of the season and improved his stock with workouts, combine and pro day. I take players at their value on the field. No, Sweed will not start on this team. If you didn't notice, Santonio Holmes is kinda good and Hines Ward will be our #1 for another 3-4 years. Should have taken Darius Butler or Britton with the first pick, I don't understand taking a player with low-upside who isn't going to step in immediately anyway.

I am well aware that Timmons and Woodley didn't come out of the last 2 drafts. I mentioned them because they were 1. Chosen by Tomlin and 2. Timmons won't start until this year. I don't think any one will say he was a poor draft pick.
Who cares what value a player had before the draft? If we held the 2000 draft over again (or whenever Tom Brady was taken, I don't feel like looking it up) you better believe teams would grade him higher than 7th round. That means that he would be TAKEN earlier. Whether or not Ziggy was a 5th round grade in the offseason is irrelevant. He had a 1st/2nd round grade coming into the draft. He would be gone by the 5th round. He would be gone by the Steelers next pick.
The Steelers had a list of value. Ziggy Hood had the highest value when they chose. They chose the BPA.
Sweed won't be a starter on this team? I did notice that Hines Ward and Santonio are "pretty good." I also did notice that Limas Sweed is all of, what, 24? Hines Ward is early-mid 30s now. Hines Ward did not start his 1st year here. Sweed has an opportunity to play plenty on the outside with Hines in the Slot in the next few years.
You claimed drafting only 1 potential starter in the past 2 years is not the way to build a team. I am simply claiming that it is EXACTLY how you build a team. They will be ready to step up when they need to. Players that start immediately are either top picks or have no competition at the position. That seems to be the indication of a poor team that has not built well. Relax and enjoy the ride.

.
I like swede and am pulling for him to be a number 1 wr, but according to your argument in the oline topic swede fell to 54 for a reason from his projected top 20-25 pick last yr like robinson fell from a 3rd rounder to a fifth! weird argument since colbert took a chance on someone other teams needed and had a shot at(who doesnt need a 6'4" number 1 wr?), maybe colbert didnt do his homework and othere teams realized swede's wrist surgery screwed up his ability to catch a football?
he was also regarded as the number 1 wr going into that yrs draft prior to th wrist surgery, how far does swede fall if colbert doesnt take him at 54?
meredith fell alot do to his injuries, maybe colbert missed out on someone at the biggest need position.
Taking meredith in the 5th after trading up would be alot less risky then taking swede at number 2...

While I would agree that Sweed fell to 54 for a reason, it doesn't change the fact that we saw value in him at that spot. There is the possibility that we didn't see something other teams saw, but we will see how he pans out in the next few years. I am not saying that I know everything about the NFL draft. I know just as much than every one else on this board, very little. What I am saying is, don't get your panties in a bunch over what ESPN says or what you think they should have done. Now, if we pull an Al Davis and grab a late first round talent at #7 and an undrafted safety in the 2nd, I will join you in the Tom Foolery.

It is possible that Colbert missed on Meredith, everyone except for the team that picked him would be guilty of that. I agree that it is far less risky in the 5th to pick him up, but not necessarily prudent. If the Steelers see him as a tackle with little upside and little chance of making the roster, why would they use even a 7th round pick on him? If they were to trade up to take him, they would be taking on more risk. 1 player for 2 players. They got The Tank, who they highly covetted, and another body at corner. I am not sold on this draft, but I trust the Front Office to make informed selections.
