Harry Kalas, the voice of NFL Films and the Philadelphia Phillies’ announcer since 1971, passed away today in the radio booth at Nationals Park prior to a Phillies game with the Washington Nationals. He was 73.
Football fans know Kalas’ voice from NFL Films, who hired him as a narrator in 1975. He narrated the award-winning NFL Films-produced highlights on "Inside the NFL" from the show’s inception in 1977 through the 2008 season.
Kalas also narrated many of the annual NFL Films-produced team highlight videos and co-hosted "This is the NFL" with Steve Sabol in the 1980s. Sabol, NFL Films president, said the loss was massive.
“In the 46 years of NFL Films, we have worked with two of the greatest voiceover talents in television history,†Sabol said in a statement. “John Facenda was the ‘Voice of God’ and Harry Kalas was the ‘Voice of the People.’
“His substance was his style. There was no shtick, just a steady blend of crisp articulation and resonance.
“In many ways, Harry is the narrator of our memories. His voice lives on not only on film, but inside the heads of everyone who has watched and listened to NFL Films.â€
It has been reported that Kalas had leg circulation problems and had a heart procedure to address those problems. He missed most of spring training after undergoing surgery in early February, the Philadelphia Daily News reported.
