Sorry, Touro....Hard Hats aren't half-heartedly given out like candy.....or contracts for Stiller punters. This ain't no half-assed Colbert operation here....there is a strict, rigorous, thorough screening process.

This comes up at least twice every season. As we state every week, the Hard Hat Award is given to the Stiller player who best embodies the iron-tough, hard-as-steel attitude of the steel workers inside the blast furnace of a still mill.

Townsend's INT was certainly productive for the scoreboard, but there wasn't a single shred of toughness, sheer force of will, or even mild exertion required. It was a "Larry Brown INT" off a poor pass that floated into his belly. And as noted in the postgame article, Town weakly whiffed on Witten in the 4Q.

Truth be told, in the postgame I gave Townsend some of the best props I've ever given a Stiller veteran:

Jersey-number wise, there are few bigger shoes to fill in Pittsburgh than that of future Hall of Famer Rod Woodson’s #26, but Townsend has been such a consummate professional during his 11-year career that he would deserve some sort of partially-shared billing if this number were ever retired.

Mega kudos to DeShea for being the wily, gritty vet that he is. There simply were more deserving players THIS week for the Hard Hat.

I appreciate the feedback. And I agree that Harrison and Pola played better and are deserving of the hard hat. It's just that I also think the winning TD was such a big play - albeit not terribly difficult - in such a big game that in this case I thought an additional hat was warranted for just showing up and doing your job.

It took me a minute to get the Larry Brown reference - I had repressed much of Super Bowl XXX though now I recall watching the game on Forbes Ave. near CMU with family and friends and time slowing down as the astonishing second interception occurred. I wonder if LB sold the Caddy and shared the proceeds with Neil O'Donnell.

Actually, this is six now.

And, you're right. He could easily get more, but a lot of teams (Jacksonville, for example) have held him in check with good strong facemasks and holds.

Who knows, outside of the Giants, he could have potentially made a sweep.

A few others that could have received consideration were (but not worthy of the award):

Woodley ==> Did not have the game Harrison had but still created a lot of problems.
Ike T. ==> Holding TO to 3 cathes is impressive. Plus the TD was on the play we only rushed three and Romo had three days to run around. Ike has put together a great season. If he could hold onto some of the INT's he would get more press outside of the Burgh.

Never lower your standards for the award.

Ike Taylor should have gotten a mention, holding TO to 3 catches i agree is no easy task. He did get beat on the touchdown, but romo had like 8 seconds to throw that ball. I don't care if you're rod woodson, covering TO for 8 seconds is a lot much to ask

Valid point on Ike....and, as I recall, at least 1 member of The Committee did bandy his name around. Ike deserved mention.....my bad for omitting him.

Because, according to Colbert, Berger embodies his idea of the Steelers...
...ergo, Colbert is desperately trying to resign him to a 5 year extension.

Really though, the title of this award should be:

...because, truthfully, Jamie deserves it every week.

Great choice Still on the Hardhat award but isnt it amazing that early in the year,everyone nationally is given the dee player award to Hanesworth,thats all you heard and harrison got no props,unless your a stiller fan,you just didnt here anything about him!!!at this pace,in my mind he has to be the frontfunner,anyone agree??

good call dude. I was at the game and Troy was all over the field. He was awesome. DT made a nice play at the end of the game, but the ball was right to him, he made a nice play to get in for the pick-6; but that was it.

Good play overall by the D, but the O needs to step it up big time if we are to be the Gavens.
