The run game... well at least that's what we used to call it

Postby Babs01 » Mon Dec 08, 2008 10:59 pm

1st off I effing love this page.. I have never had more fun reading articles in my life. Some of the analysis by Still mill is just spot on and when I take this info to friends/colleagues they argue for a moment and then the lose.. which I just love. Anyways.. My question to all of you is when in hell did we decide to run parker with trips right/left? This has to be one of the worse run formations in the NFL. Can anyone explain this to me?

I can't explain it to you, Babs01, but I can welcome you to the board.

I hope you keep asking questions like this.

My best guess would be that Arians runs out of these formations with the assumption that the defense will be looking for a pass, and therefore we can catch them off guard. Unfortunately, I haven't seen this happening too much and like many on this board I miss seeing us running out of a more power formation such as with a FB. I know we don't have a traditional blocking fullback, but I think that Spaeth or Heath would be capable of lining up in the backfield as a blocking back. IMO

been thinking the same, the trips formation causes the defense to already have 8 in the box by default. if we want to run it from a passing formation we should use the spread instead. it worked for us in the past. too bad whenever we run a spread formation there's always an empty backfield which eliminates the threat of a run, which is kinda stupid. I remember in the o'donnell era, we did the draw to erric pegram from the spread and he ripped off some pretty nice gains. I'm sure we could do the same thing with moore

hey all

been reading your board and Still Mill for a couple of years - I am homeless after the TRIB shut down so I hope you will welcome me - I am a die hard Stillers fan living in RatLand and will be there in full uniform Sunday!!!!

regarding this thread, I have one word times 3: RUSSELL, RUSSELL, RUSSELL

this alone ought to get Arians fired (hello Tomlin, do you know who this guy Russell is??!!) - are we the only ones that see his potential? We have 3 games to go - get him in the O mix regularly and start this week.

This is a valuable point.

Over the past two weeks, the only time that the run game has been able to garner much against our own #1 ranked defense is through that draw out of the shotgun (not necessarily spread, but at least shotgun).

You'd think that if it works so well against the #1 defense, it would work against other defenses.

Hmm.....

I just can't believe that Fast Willie only got 12 carries last week. I know they're trying to keep him healthy, but Ben's gonna nailed more and more when these defenses know damn well he's gonna drop back every time.
