A Little Optimism—Red Zone Efficiency

Postby Stillustronic » Wed Nov 26, 2008 8:40 am

Surprisingly, the Patriots rank 20th in Red Zone offense so far this year, and the Steelers are 5th.

5. Pitt. 31 20 9 .935 .645

20. N.E. 43 22 18 .930 .512

NOT surprisingly, The Steelers defense leads the league in yet another defensive category, Red Zone defense. New England is next to LAST!

1. Pitt. 32 11 14 .781 .344

31. N.E. 33 22 9 .939 .667

If there's any chink in their dominance of our team lately this may provide us more hope than first glance has many of us thinking.

For the complete Red Zone stat list;
http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFL+Statistics/Inside+the+Red+Zone/2008/12redzn.htm?mode=defense

That's twice as many TDs surrendered when teams get close than us, in virtually the same number of occurrences.

I assume the first number in those statlines is total trips to the red zone, where we have 31 and they have 43?

Just out of curiousity Tronic, how do we rank in the league in terms of overall trips? It seems like we'd be towards the bottom half of the league. Obviously above the Detroits and Oaklands of the league, but still in the bottom half, i'd think.

That doesn't really discredit your point in any way, since it doesn't seem the differences in the number from top the bottom would be significant enough to impact the overall percentages, it's just more for my curiousity.

The link was provided.

On defense we are par with NE, TB defended the lowest 20 trips, Philly second with 25, the highs as much as 46, and average is high 30s, and substantial in low 40s.

On OFFENSE, our 31 trips represent 7th lowest, with 7 other teams tied or one or two more trips. Low Mid Pack. High trips skyrocket to the mid 50s for the Giants at just over .500 scoring TDs from there, ARI at 52 trips and .577 TD%. There are lots of teams in the low 40s.

Did you think our offense rates very high in total points? You know where we are there.

TB with the low, has given up 20 more points than us, and Philly 69 more, but we also know where our defense is.

Still, we're playing NE, and .645 TD% is better than .512. Backwards project, we get there 3 times to their 4.

It's just Red Zone for what it's worth, who most is apt to score on longer plays, STs, returns, pass, and rush?

Too bad the game isn't played on paper. I am really nervous about this game. If we win, this will be HUGE! Not to mention the boost of confidence it will give the team, but we may very well be knocking the Pats out of the playoffs.
