I am not sold. I have to admit, I liked the tapes. I am also tempered by the old saw, draft the BPA, dont reach for need.

I am just confused that we went for Ziggy and now here we are getting another DL. In both instances we needed a CB badly, so somewhere along the damn line we need to get a FN CB, not one of these airheads we got littering the bench now

Ok, Mr Colbert, I will respect your choice, but you must respect this:

I am going to resurrect my complete Utter rage about how we FUCKING PISSED AWEAY THE FUCKING SUPER FUCKING BOWL. DAMNIT!

Steelers 2nd round pick is Florida OT Marcus Gilbert.

OT is an obvious need for the Steelers.
Question is, does Gilbert fill the need.
I see Gilbert as an eventual starter at RT, but probably not this season (barring injuries).

I like the player and like him on the roster, but think we took him earlier than he deserved to be drafted. (Stillers.com's Haven had him as a 3rd round value & Lindy's as a 4th round value)

It seems to me, that by taking Heyward in round 1 (a position of low need since we return Ziggy a first round pick & Kiesle a pro bowler) the steelers are now forced to chase positions of great need such as O-line, thereby drafting players higher than they would otherwise be drafted.

serious run on CBs in the 3rd round
(and they are already 2nd level CBs)

and the Steelers need two new starting CBs this year

Steelers 3rd round pick is Texas CB, Curtis Brown.

Finally a Value Pick that fills a need
(Stillers.com Haven has Brown as a 2nd round value & Lindy's has him as a 2nd/3rd)

We'll see if Brown can compete for a starting Job. If not, I'd say he is an immediate upgrade as the nickle.

I take to take a second take when they picked Curtis Brown. They had announced him originally from the podium as a defensive back. I was like NOOOO!!!

Gil Brandt agrees that Gilbert was a reach

Swing and a miss:
Steelers drafting Marcus Gilbert. The Florida offensive tackle was all over the board –- one team even had him has a possible first-rounder. But most had him going as low as the fifth round. I had him in my 100-to-125 plateau, so No. 63 is a bit risky.

I notice that even in the 4th round the Texans once again appear to be trying to play spoiler to the Steelers. What is up with this? I also notice that we play these MFers 10/02. I will circle that day on the calendar.

Sorry - hit enter erroneously. On Carter, he played a 5 technique DE with his r Hand down. He will need a lot of coaching to learn OLB in the 3-4. BUT - he may be a special teams monster

Kid - This is a discussion board. It would be a pretty boring place if we all agreed.

CB's Ike Taylor and top reserve William Gay are both free agents, and there's no guarantee either player will return. Even if they are re-signed, they and our entire seondary were tourched in the Super Bowl and during the season.
Hopefully the DB's the Steelers drafted can make an impact this year (I think Brown will in the Nickle), but it would be unsual for players drafted in the 3rd and 4th round to be come starters.

The D-line was a strength last season, ranking among the best in all catagories. All last years players return. People say this is an area of need due to the age of the players, but until their play declines, it simply isn't. Perhaps it can be argued that Smith's play has declined simply because he isn't on the field due to injuries (he played very well when healthy) but that is why Ziggy was drafted and Smith fills the reserve roll well.

The O-line was an area of major weakness last year. Willie Colon is coming off a serious Achilles injury and is a free agent. Max Starks is coming of a neck injury, and ORT Flozell Adams at 35 is not the player he use to be - he's just bad now. (I believe Adams & Scott are also free agents.) Hills has shown nothing. Keomeatu makes stupid penalities repeatedly and sucks in pass protection. Other Guard spot is completely open to any journeyman that is healthy enough to play. Can/should either of the guys drafted start? doubt it.

Dulac and the PPG says

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to dress DE Cam Heyward for every game and have him play six to eight plays per game so he can get comfortable with the defense. Heyward likely would not be the next in line to start if one of the team's defensive ends get injured.

is that what you expect from a 1st round pick?

The Pittsburgh Steelers could consider trying OT Marcus Gilbert at offensive guard. If Gilbert showed that he had the ability to play offensive guard he could see playing time next season.

so much for help at the OT position this year.

Pittsburgh Steelers OT Willie Colon likely will not be used as offensive guard because he has never practiced at the position and does not run well enough to play the position.

Does not run well? how about doesn't move well, or block well, or play well.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Baron Batch could make an impact as a special teams player because he has the toughness and temperament to play special teams.

so no immediate starter on DL from this draft. no immediate help at OT from this draft, BUT HEY WE GOT A SPECIAL TEAMER

I think hammer has gone off the deep end.

Both of our drafts in the past two years have been amazing. You are emphasizing immediate needs over value. With Heyward they got both. Aaron Williams was NOT a value at 31. Most of his good attributes were purely based on athletic potential and size. After Peterson and Amukamara, there was a huge drop off. It seems like you would be satisified if you just heard, "with the 31st pick in the NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select (insert name), cornerback (insert school)." Brown was not rated that much lower than Williams. Grabbing him in the 3rd round that far back as we were was mind boggling.

I want to know what you said about the 2009 draft, because that was absolutely wretched. Thank god for Wallace because I called every single one of those other losers getting cut. Ziggy is no where near the DE Heyward was in college btw, especially if you're talking about 5 tech.

per KFFL, Peter King 1st said this:

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder said recently during a radio interview that the team had a deal in place with the Pittsburgh Steelers to trade the 16th overall pick in the NFL Draft to Pittsburgh for the 31st overall pick plus other choices. The Steelers, however, didn't do the deal when it came time to pull the trigger. The player Pittsburgh wanted was gone by the time the 16th pick rolled around. The Steelers were believed to be interested in Miami Dolphins OG Mike Pouncey.

then said this:
Contrary to a previous report, Washington Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said the Redskins did not have a deal in place with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 16th overall pick and the Steelers never even called about the pick.

i would be livid if we traded up that high to grab Mike Pouncey. He was a reach even at 30. Remember if he went into the same draft as guys like Iupati and his brother, he'd be a mid-2nd round pick. I found it absolutely hilarious that the Phins took him higher than his much more talented brother.

Heyward is set to join the team at camp.

The Steelers signed their third-round draft pick Friday night, Curtis Brown, a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback from Texas. All of their rookies are under contract and at training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.

Curtis Brown, also. Time to re-visit the concept of two dogs/one bone between he and Cortez Allen(4th round/pick 128). May the best player win---and see the field!
