Don't ream Tomlin for using Berger after the safety
According to Jim Wexell, NFL rules now forbid the use of a tee on free kicks.

I think that's been in place for quite some time. You can punt, drop kick, or place kick without a tee, (I suppose someone holds, like a FG).

Wexell made it sound like you couldn't do a kickoff of any kind.
But that might have been him being Wexell.

i dont know the rules differ for college, but i just saw this happen this past weekend in a college game. a free kick after a safety was done by someone holding the ball and the kicker kicked it like a kickoff

OK- then I retract what I said.
We can still get on Tomlin for that.

In the Chargers-Saints game the Kicker kicked the ball on a free kick after a safety with a holder...Coach dropped the ball here....
