Martin Nance

Picking up Ben's favorite college receiver off the waiver list this week wasn't big news, but it could pay big dividends down the road.

I remember when a highly coveted quarterback - Jim Plunkett - was a first round draft choice, and his receiver - Randy Vataha - was a draft day afterthought. Vataha went to the Rams or someplace, and did nothing. Then, when the Patriots picked him up and he was reunited with his QB, the combination clicked perfectly for five or six years.

If Nance plays, he'll no doubt be the third or fourth receiver on the field....and will do a lot of quick timing patterns. And the thought here is that he and Ben could get out of sick beds on Groundhog Day and run half a dozen timing patterns perfectly.
They know each other's timing, and have confidence in each other.

This is a low risk gamble, with a possible solid payoff. Only downside here is that Nance - at maybe 6'3" and 215 - probably would get broken like a twig if he tried to play on special teams. So he seems to be a receiver only. And he doesn't have great speed. But he's tall, can catch the ball, and works well with Ben. So let's roll the dice and see what happens! :subngtowl: :subngtowl: :subngtowl:
