Stat of the Season.............
The first defensive play and last defensive play of the season, the Steelers gave up a total of 116 yards....... On two plays.......... That might be an NFL record.
Whenever Tom Brady loses, it's always someone else's fault.
Re: Stat of the Season.............
Equally embarassing, and probably more telling, is the fact that, in the Steelers' first and last defensive outings overall, the defense allowed two incredibly average, even sub-par, quarterbacks carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey. There's your #1 ranked pass D, ladies and gentlemen. Enjoy.
Re: Stat of the Season.............
As noted in my objective look before the game, the injuries we had were absurd. And then early on we lose Hampton and Kiesel with Hoke already out for the year and we need to play McClendon and Heyward with basically no backups? Going into the year, we knew our CBs and general secondary sucked. We needed to upgrade the talent. Yesterday, due to injury, we had zero new players from last year in the secondary and actually lost one because of Clark being out. Add that to zero of the starting offensive lineman from week one being on the field in the second half and one aging LB spot and you have serious problems. The loss was not about Denver, it was about us being bad. That is why we could only beat the Clowns 13-9. It is why we had the other poor showings down the stretch.
The key to next year on D will be Allen and Brown in the secondary, whether we can draft a safety with speed, whether we can fill in on the D-Line and whether we can finally replace one more Offensive Lineman. We also need to avoid injuries -- which when you have an aging team is hard to do. Yet this year at least the lack of training camp and conditioning did not help.
If we can bring back cotchery that would really help as well. He is a perfect fit.
Finally, the front office needs to stop spending big money on fragile guys that are out for the year by week two. Colon? Smith? Hampton seems on his way there. Remember you cannot make the club in the tub. We need warriors.
