Random Observations from the Falcons game

Postby Pump-N-Iron » Wed Aug 31, 2011 9:35 am

Bruce Arians - After a stellar KO return by Money Brown, Arians STUNNED everyone by calling 2 consecutive, perfectly executed, waggles to David Johnson, who immediately proved why Matt Spaeth was permitted to walk. Both plays attacked the defense and kept them off balance. I thought for a moment that we actually had a decent OC. Then, after his brief glimmer of genius, BA returned to his goat-humping ways. To start the 2nd offensive series, he called for an end around to Brown to the SHORT side of the field, resulting in a TFL and a holding call. Then on 2nd and 19, he calls a mindless line plunge to Mendy which netted 2 yards. Finally, on 3rd and long, BR7 gets sacked and we punt. Not happy with that, he proceeded to piss away golden FP with a 1st and goal at the 4, resulting in a chip-shot FG. Putrid.

Ben Roth – Some good, some bad. The laser to Money Brown for the 77 yard TD was stellar, as was the 23 yard completion to Ward. The 44 yard TD to Brown was under thrown and behind him, but still resulted in 6 due to an excellent adjustment. He also had a horrible toss to a wide open Ward that went incomplete. Ward was angling toward the sidelines and then had to adjust to a pass thrown straight up the hash marks. Finally, how the fuck was there no penalty for ripping BR7’s helmet off?

Timmons – Man among boys, obviously happy with his new contract. In one 3 play series, he laid a huge pad-popping hit on Turner. Blitzed and had immediate pressure on Ryan. Then, picked off a batted pass and ran it to the 4. He also had good coverage on Gonzales on 3rd and goal causing Ryan to try to make a perfect pass which fell incomplete. He was literally all over the field.

Crezdon Butler – This guy is definitely making the most of his PT this preseason. Yeah, the receiver slipped, but kudos to him for being in the same zip code as the pass. This is in stark contrast to Gay, who was last seen giving a 20 yard cushion to Julio Jones. Sure, Butler gave up some completions, but he was always right there to make the sure tackle. I seriously hope that his progress has pushed him ahead of Gay on the depth chart.

Tomlin – I must say I was quite shocked when he used a TO prior to the 2 min warning before halftime. He is not known for this type of time management. My only problem for him on the night was… WHY DID HE NOT THROW THE CHALLENGE FLAG?!?!?!? It’s preseason, who cares if you burn a TO on a lost challenge. You can't take them with you Mikey... grow a pair and challenge it.

Cam Heyward and Ziggy Hood – These guys are making a lot of solid plays on the interior. Keisel and Smith will be that much better late in games and down the stretch if these guys keep them rested and healthy.

Butler played VERY well, and so did the other young defensive backs for that matter. Atlanta had 60 passes for a net gain of 299 yards. 5 yards per attempt is a very impressive stat with McFadden and Ike not even active.

Redman should get plenty of carries this season. He can run head up and truck guys, or he has shown a wiggle n' shake ability to break through tackles. Good player.

Timmons is a star in the making. :subngtowl:
