cowher vs tomlin after almost 4 seasons

Postby hatethebrowns » Fri Jan 28, 2011 5:11 pm

I myself was a little worried about the choice of tomlin to replace cowher but my worrys have since gone away. If you look at the numbers in the first 4 seasons of each the numbers just dont lie.

cowher
92 reg season 11-4 3rd in afc
92 playoffs Lost to Buffalo Bills in AFC Divisional Game. playoff record 0-1
93 reg season 9-7 7th in afc
93 playoffs Lost to Kansas City Chiefs in AFC Wild-Card Game. playoff record 0-1
94 reg season 12-4 1st in afc
94 playoffs Lost to San Diego Chargers in AFC Championship Game. playoff record 1-1
95 reg season 11-5 2nd in afc
95 playoffs Lost to Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX. playoff record 2-1

cowher was 43-21 in reg season and 3-4 in the playoffs in his first 4 years great reg season numbers but sucked in the playoffs where to the real season begins

tomlin
07 reg season 10-6 4th in afc
07 playoffs Lost to Jacksonville Jaguars in AFC Wild-Card Game. 0-1
08 reg season 12-4 2nd in afc
08 playoffs Super Bowl XLIII Champions playoffs 3-0
09 reg season 9-7 8th in afc
09 missed playoffs
10 reg season 12-4 2nd afc
10 playoffs 2-0* "* to be continued"

tomlin is 43-21 in the reg season exactly the same the big difference the playoffs where tomlin 5-1*. granted tomlin came in to the job with a stud QB but cowher had a chance to draft on in his first 4 years and chose not to. cowher had great dfences to work with just like tomlin and home field as well.

im not writeing this to say how much better of a coach MT is but how he takes a role with his players and doesnt let them run the team. such as this quote

"The issue for us has been, is and hopefully will continue to be winning -- that's my interpretation of Steelers football ... Every morning I come to work I walk past five Lombardis, not five rushing titles. The issue is winning. "

statements like this say he is in control and has a plan that is action and its his way or the highway.

you can compare cowher to statements like this but it was because he was always screaming on the sidelines and made for a good show on NFL network when he was miced up but thats about the only thing it was good for.

yelling on the sidelines and looking pissed off doesnt the affects as tomlins way does

Im not drinking the kool-aid but if you compare theses 2 its like night and day and so are the results

tomlin is a general on and off the field always calm cool and collective while cowher was more of a holy shit it didnt work and im going to yell about it and hope it goes away

with tomlin it seems like we are never out of the game no matter what the score is and with cowher it seemed that if there up by 10 turn out the lights and try again next time

in closeing i think that playing in the super bowl is going to happen many more times in the coming years with coach tomlin at the helm
"Now that I'm here, I don't want to just be here, I want to be here for a long time." Hines Ward :D, 1998.

2 words - Ben Roethlisberger. It's as simple as that.

You can't compare the two because Cowher had to rebuild the Steelers. Chuck Noll after years of great coaching had lost his edge as had the organization. The Steelers spent the 1980s mired in mediocrity-- mostly 9 and 7 at best with a couple of real stinkers as I recall. Tomlin came to a veteran team, veteran coaches, a franchise qb. He has done a great job--not arguing that, but the real test for him will be in a few years as LeBeau retires and he has to rebuild the talent.
