Great points. I can see it. Follow the $, still not sure then $%&(* follow the @$#% $$$. 18 games and lets start to get rid of smashmouth defenses else all 18 games wont be very entertaining. Makes sense, grow fanbase with females and Europe, what else u got, besdies asia. Asian boys would probably prefer smashmouth? Problem is Im ingrained for +45 years on smothering defenses :(

One other point to make.

Roger is a lawyer and sees a large liability problem in the coming years for all of these hits. So, he's changing the image and punishing the hard-hitting teams like the Stillers this year to gain leverage in the new CBA.

He want's players to see how the new NFL will be if they don't accept full responsilibilty for such risks. In other words, the players assume all risk or some legalism like that.

Regardless, anyone who does not believe that this is a purposeful mandate by the NFL is a fool.

The problem with the NFL playing girlie football is there is already a real girlie league- the Lingerie Football League.......

I cannot imagine the pickle the likes of Dick Butkus, Jack Tatum, Ronnie Lott, and Jack Lambert would have been in today's NFL.........

The final item? Maybe Goodell is a Republican, and the Rooneys kiss up to the Democrats......... Mixing politics and sports means death, regardless of which side the front office kisses up to.

And back to the Lingerie League....... If you think these girls can't play, maybe this video will open your eyes.

Mill a lot of what you write about makes sense to me but I agree with Doger "The final item? Maybe Goodell is a Republican, and the Rooneys kiss up to the Democrats......... Mixing politics and sports means death, regardless of which side the front office kisses up to." If the fag Goodell wants to make the game safer and longer seasons why let the hits on Ben's head continue? Did you notice how the Steeler fortunes changed when Rooney foolishly gave credit to Obama after Super Bowl 43? I did!

What I don't understand is we have a basic 20 game schedule now. Sixteen regular season games and four preseason. Goodell wants two of preseason games to turn into regular season games. So basically we still have a 20 game schedule except 18 now are regular season games. This might increase revenue some what but how much is the question.

I go on the theory that Goodell is buddies with Kraft and Kraft wants his team to have the largest number of SB wins not the lowly Steelers. No other team gets flagged like the Steelers and no other team gets the no-flags like the Steelers. Did you notice that all the holding calls the Steelers had called against them in the Bengals game - none to my memory was replayed? Conspiracy theory of conspiracy fact? You make the call.

What will really prove Mill's point is if the day comes that the NFL is ref'd like the NBA. Exciting teams with Superstars that the NBA's marketing strategy seem to get all the calls and end up in the finals. That ref who got caught betting almost admitted as much that the NBA is referred for superstars. The refering this year as he points out is getting very questionable...almost like they are told how to call a game. Now, the Steelers are still a very marketable franchise, but as he points out, if the overall game doesn't fit into the marketing image that team will be relegated to second rate and the glamor teams will prevail.

This is the exact reason why Rush Limbaugh would never be a good owner. The exact same problem.

Prior to that SB, I've often admitted the officiating favoring the Stillers after a game......... Something changed after that SB- I've never since seen a game where I've thought that. Not once. I don't recall the Stiller fans ever yelling "Refs, you suck!!" either. At least to a noticeable degree on TV.

We are all missing the point. The teams of the most vilified QB's in the league right now (Vick and Benji) are two teams that Roger Goodsell can not afford to see make successful runs in the playoffs because of the PR nightmare it would cause with the female, neo-conservative, and neo-liberal customer demographic. Unfortunately for Goodsell both of these teams are poised to go deep into the playoffs without some subtle intervention to maintain the targeted markets for revenue growth.
It really does boil down to whose face and persona can sell the game (like the talented Tom Pretty and talented but bland Manning brothers), and everyone from the media lackeys the officials are marching in lockstep to the fuhrers cadence. I agree that physical teams like the Eagles, Steelers, and Ravens are also at a disadvantage because of a paradigm shift in the way the league wants the game to be played-the goal of which is an image overhaul. Two more shots to the head and a couple of blatant late hits for Ben and no flags, the evidence is all there on tape and the league does nothing about it.

Well-written and logical post even if we have a openly declared bias.

Goodell has spent far too much time on and around Manhattan.

If you think ESPN has NY-Boston on the brain they are pikers compared to Goodell who has attended more Patriots, Jets and Giants games than those teams' own season ticket holders.

Goodell seems to like Madden/video-game football more than the real thing. He seems happiest when uniforms are clean, socks tucked in and scores are in the 48-31 neighborhood.

The problem with hyper-accurate 'protect the QB' rules is that the increments are so small they make discrepancies in enforcement proportionally very large. As a lawyer Goodell apparently believes there must be a winner and a loser and in this case the losers are predetermined i.e. any player or team who threatens Goodell's neat-n-tidy vision.

Palmer Sucks, I agree with your analysis on pretty much all counts. There is one thing that bothers me tremendously. Why are the Stillers not getting the calls that every other team does? There are plenty of violent hits made by other teams against the Stillers that just aren’t called. We’ve all seen the numerous egregious hits on Big Ben that are never called. This isn’t new to the 2010 season; it’s been going on since Ben was a rookie. It’s just become blatantly obvious this year because of the supposed crackdown on “dangerous plays”. During the jets game, the several interference calls that were never called as well as the OOB hit on Mendy were particularly infuriating examples of the complete bullshit that is occurring.
Although I agree with your theory, I believe certain teams and players are in fact being targeted and it’s not just their style of play. Along with your ideas, I’d like to put out another theory of what’s going on in Führer Goodell’s NFL.
Let me start by saying that there are 2 teams that you will not see in the super bowl – the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. More specifically, there are 2 quarterbacks – Ben Roethlisberger and Michael Vick – that will only be in Dallas stadium if they have a ticket come super bowl Sunday.
Mark my words, neither of these teams or quarterbacks will be in the super bowl. No matter how well they play, the refs will do everything in their power to prevent them from getting to the big dance.
The NFL under Goodell is obsessed with image; Ben and Mike don’t fit the clean cut, good boy image like Brady does (regardless of the reality).
That’s just how it is. In a game of inches, refs carry tremendous power and Ben and Mike might as well give it up right now and train for next season.
Don’t buy it, watch and see what happens come playoff time…
